M140i stolen

Post by razor61 » Mon Dec 11, 2017 4:09 pm

Now I've got over the shock of the house being broken into, spare key taken and my VO M140i stolen, I'll document what happened in the hope that it may stop someone else going through the same thing.
So, last Thursday @ 06:00am I awoke to my wife shouting upstairs that we had been burgled and the car had gone from the drive. At first I couldn't work out how they had gained entry until I went outside and discovered that the lock on the conservatory doors had been 'snapped'. I didn't realise how easy the type of lock fitted was to break and therefore get in. We live in pretty quiet neighbourhood in the North West but the drive and back of the house is pretty dark etc. I don't have CCTV or alarm or security lights, maybe I should have all those things but I should be able to own a nice car without spending a fortune on securing it and worrying if it's going to be nicked. Fast forward to Sat morning and I had a call from Lancashire police to say that the car had been recovered in the West Midlands after a short 100mph pursuit during which time a 'stinger' had been used. 4 x occupants were in the car and 2 x were arrested at the scene, one bitten by a police dog which I hope did a lot of damage to the thief!
I'm now waiting to find out what other damage there is and if I will get the car back or whether it will be a total loss, I would prefer a total loss as I have 'to invoice' GAP insurance.
I have now replaced the original locks from all doors with locks that cannot be snapped, the original locks were fitted with the new upvc doors well over 10 years ago and are not secure enough anymore (maybe never were). Granted, thieves can break the glass or remove the glass etc but at least the locks cannot be snapped again.
I just wanted to let people know that they might think the locks they have are secure when in reality they may not be, can be 'snapped' and the thief can be in through the door in les than a minute.

:( Bad times, hope the Mrs isn't too shaken up.

27th car to have been taken/attempted on here recently, all with the exact same M.O.

Can you garage your car in future, rather than leaving it on display on the drive? When displayed it on your property, it's way too easy to work out which house contains the fob. :(

Or park your car on your neighbours drive.... :D

My neighbours think I'm mad that I actually use my garage for its intended purpose and not a glorified storage room.

They think I'm even stranger for putting the car away the second I get home rather than leaving it on the drive for all to see.

Sorry to hear about this OP.

How are these people finding the cars? Are you just unlucky in that the wrong person drives past your house and sees the car? Or is it possible to find peoples cars online somehow? Or is someone at the DVLA selling the info to these low life scum?

Very concerning.

Sorry to hear this. Hope the scrotes get rabies.

It was on the radio this morning that car crime is on a sudden rise in the last 12 months - largely down to technology that was secure a year or three ago now being vulnerable. Sales of steering wheel locks are on the up.

As so many people don't use a garage for storing a car I would imagine any potential thief would assume the car was not at the property if it wasn't sat on the drive.
