Home Security

Post by simong_1984 » Tue Dec 12, 2017 2:21 pm

Hi all,

In the weeks running up to collecting my M140i, I made a couple of changes to improve my home security as a result of the recent theft posts. Namely;
I plan to do the following where funds allow;
Other ideas include
  • Steering wheel lock - Acts as a visible deterrent and should slow them down - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Steering-Unive ... 0734R66B4/
  • Drive posts - Sadly I can't fit these as I would need several posts and they could probably do a 23 point turn and drive on to the neighbours garden anyway

I think that's a pretty good start but does anyone else have any suggestions?

A poster on the house saying you’ve done all this? Although said in jest, I honestly think it would deter would be thieves as they are looking for an easy smash and grab of the keys.

Nice lost though and appreciate the links to products. I also plan to do at least some of the above.

Let us know if the signal blocking bag actually works if you can?

Interested in getting one of those bags, but always dubious as to whether they work or not.

Will do.

I'm wrapping them in foil for the time being, but I haven't tested how well this works.

The reviews on the bag are good, so I'm confident it will do the job.

Good point - I'm hoping the security cameras are obvious enough to act as a warning sign!

Hi all,

In the weeks running up to collecting my M140i, I made a couple of changes to improve my home security as a result of the recent theft posts. Namely;
  • Cylinder locks - Replace bog standard Euro cylinder locks on interior and exterior front doors and one back door with ABS Avocet cylinder locks (cost ~£180 for 4 cylinders) - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Avocet-ABS-Hig ... abs+avocet
  • House alarm - Configure house alarm so it can be set at night to monitor the downstairs area and upstairs bedroom - I don't know why I didn't do this sooner (cost £freeeee)
  • Sash jammers - (I have yet to fit these) on all downstairs windows (cost ~£10-20) - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00 ... UTF8&psc=1
I plan to do the following where funds allow;

This is a great summary. The problem with all the various discussions is that they are hard to read through but this is a clear and concise list for people to start from. Thank-you.

I think nowadays, they can amplify the signal of the key, and then basically clone it, so even those without keyless entry aren't safe anymore sadly.

Good list, but I don't think solar security lights are a great idea; in my experience, they aren't very bright. Also, the RFID pouch isn't very expensive admittedly, but if it is just for keeping your key fobs (remember the spare one too), a metal biscuit tin will do the job, possibly more effectively.

This is why you would need the keybag - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/11 ... lay-theft/.

The box they have relays the keyfob signal and tricks the car into the thinking the keyfob is nearby.

I don't know how they get around opening the car in the first place though. Is keyless entry an option on these cars? Thinking about it, mine only has keyless start so this method of attack is unlikely?

Presume you don't have a garage? That would probably be better than everything you've listed.

I do have a garage but sadly it's not an option.

A double garage is definitely on my list of requirements for when we move house though.

My friend mentioned to me this signal amplifier thie the es use and I was shocked. Definitely will keep keys far away from doors and windows from now on. I might invest in light with motion sensor as well. My only worry is what about when car is parked in public places? One of my neighbours have focus rs and he's putting a lock on his steering wheel. I might invest in that.
Does any of you have a GPS tracker? I know you can also install device which would allow you to kill the ending from your mobile.
I know REVO offered this obd dongle for vw group cars where you can change your fuel maps between standard/tuned/and no fuel so car won't start. I don't know if they do ones for Bmw.

Is the signal blocker bag only worth it if you have comfort access?
