440i and Mlite40i - back to back

Has anyone driven the 440i two door and the M140/240 pretty much back to back, or has a lot of driving time in both?

I know the smaller cars are going to be quicker, with both a hp and weight advantage, but does the 440i offer advantages itself in any way?

It's a bit of an open ended question, I know.

I've now driven the M140 ZF8 (they are pretty quick, aren't they!) but yet to try the 440.

I've focused my question on the two door 440 specifically because it's quite a bit lighter than the GC (I think).

That's kind of what I thought it would be like, really.

I do really like the hooligan nature of the 140 though. I came away from the drive thinking 'there's just no need to map this, it has more than enough'.

It's a bloody fun car, for sure.

I wasn't anywhere near as impressed with the RS3 from a driving perspective, but I've never gelled with an Audi yet. Having had BMWs pretty much since 2003 I suppose you get used to the brand and FR drivetrain.

I've driven the m135 and 440 back to back. Had a 17 plate 440 for 3 weeks while my 65 plate m135i was in the garage.

The 440 is a good car, no doubt about that, but I found it boring. It had almost no engine noise aside from something similar to what you'd get revving a refined 4 banger. Couldn't hear the exhaust at all, at any revs. Started mine (m135) up after and it instantly felt like a more fun car, especially cornering.

The suspension was better in the 440 - both cars have adaptive - and felt more refined. Not by miles but there was a difference. Perhaps because of the weight. Road noise was a lot less in the 440, but I've since swapped my mpss for winters and the difference is massive. Much better on winters. I preferred the interior of the 440 mainly due to more space but I don't miss it now I'm back in the 135. Also prefer my older I drive- new seems fiddly but the 140 has the same.

M135 felt quicker, and I'd guess the m140 would feel quicker still.

Family, space and comfort? 440
Fun and fast? M140/35

I suspect the 440 is going to feel much more similar to the E90. Which is what you'd expect, I suppose!

I'm toying with the idea of hanging on to the 335 and having an Mlite as well, rather than the Mlite instead of the 335. The E90 is a good sized family car. That means potentially two N55 cars (or N55 and B58 140) on the driveway which feels nuts to me!

Then I began to consider the 440i, as a single 'do everything car'. Yes I know it's a two door but we had a E500 Coupe for six months back along and it was fine for us. Kids old enough to climb into their own seats and do their own belts up now, but not so big to be squashed in a coupe.

I certainly can't justify selling the E90 and buying both a 440i and a M140i that's just too much £.

I've had HUD before (early version on E61) and it's fantastic. I expect it's much better on the newer F series cars. Adaptive cruise is very good if you're in a lot of traffic too.

I don't mind the Dakota, I'm so used to it after all these years in various E series cars, but merino would be very nice.

I have found a used 4 series coupe with both adaptives (cruise and suspension) as well as HUD, but it's a bloody diesel. Sod's law.

I might have a look at it anyway just to see how all the tech works on the newer cars and check it out for space etc.

Yeah that's a good call and I haven't ruled it out.

I suggested the 440 for the comparison question as I thought it would be a bit lighter, lower CofG, plus you get more toys.

MPPSK or JB4 is certainly on the list.

What about the 340?

Def factor in the MPPSK - find some videos on YouTube!

I'm lining a touring 340 shadow edition up at the moment amd have managed 22% off so far which helps with the mega depreciation - near enough £30k off list over 4 years
I feel like the gfv is very low on the 340/440i but with Apr so low at 1.9% it just means in a few years when you come to trade in you are far more likely to be in positive equity. Not really a bad thing.

Doesn't look like it has m sport plus pack. Deal breaker for me.

#17 ·
It doesn't, you're right. However, I prefer the smaller wheels, see through glass, and it has HK.

Out of stuff I'd actually want from the plus pack, I'm just missing the larger brake discs.

Deposit paid, pick up Tuesday :D

#19 ·
Absolutely. I was very close to ordering a 140 and anything other than the shadow just doesn't make sense when you look at the numbers, particularly as HK CC and PDC were must haves for me.
