Houses with garages

Post by Johnnyo » Sat Jan 13, 2018 3:54 pm

Given all of these thefts (knowledge of which is heightened by the internet and forums such as these, social media etc.) and attempted thefts, how many people actually use their garages if they have them? Or are they just used to store crap..

Admittedly new houses generally have tiny garages, the Mlites aren't big cars and should fit okay...

Got a garage but it’s a home gym / storage area. Both our cars live on the drive.

Purchased a newbuild last May. One of the deciding factors, amongst others, was the provision of a garage.

The car gets put away in it religiously. It's only ever on the driveway when it's being washed. Otherwise, it's locked away or being used.

My old man converted his garage to a workshop, and as a result started parking the car on the drive instead of in the garage, his insurance cost went down. On clarifying why, it was said that there are a huge amount of claims from minor dings to doors, or hitting things when squeezing in to garages, that just didn't happen to cars parked on drives. May be car related though, and more stolen cars may be more cheaply insured when kept inside.... Also may be location sensitive; he was in rural Scotlandshire.

I'd use my garage if my other half didn't keep buying endless crap that I have to store in there.

Mine's always in the garage except when I'm out in it or I'm washing it. It'll always go straight back in after as I like it out of sight.

No one else on my street puts their car in their garage (annoyingly and dangerously clogging up the road / pavements) so hopefully their cars will be the first to go if the scumbags decide to strike.

Who are these morons claiming for minor dings they've got parking in their garage? Surely the excess and future premium increases mean it's not worth claiming.

When I renewed my insurance I was curious as to what it would cost to put in the garage... they wanted a further 15% or so on the premium... absolutely daft I thought... suffice to say I didn’t go with it.

To answer the thread title, yes I do have a garage, and no I don't put the M-lite in there. But it is used for a car.

We’re lucky to have a double garage. So half is filled with junk, while the other half has my M140 safely tucked up inside. Out of sight, out of mind when low-life scum go on the rob in the wee small hours.

Apparently it’s cheapest to put “on street parking” for your insurance. I assume this is because it’s harder for a thief to tell what house has the keys inside it.

Garaged here.

For the first few months of 240 ownership it was on the drive as my garage was chock full of crap, but it felt vulnerable to theft and also damage as it was mid winter.

So I spent a few weeks chucking stuff then coming up with some big storage shelves and overhead storage so the car could live in there.

It now goes in all the time except when being washed, even if I come home and know I’ll be out again in 10 minutes it still goes in the garage and the door is closed very quickly!!

Garaged whenever I am home with a disklok on the steering wheel and my other car backed right up to the garage door.On top of that I have 2 cctv cameras pointing at my garage doors.
