For me, at least 75% of the appeal of the Mlites is the engine - it's the car's USP. I'm damned if I'm having some droney four pot so will have to go up to 3 Series size next time to get a six.

just think i will buy my 140 i know its been looked after and it has everything i want 6/RWD
It'll be the Countryman chassis not the 3 door hatch.

Agree with the comments on the Cooper S though. My wife has one and it's great fun. I'd love a JCW.

The first gen will be circa 300bhp and AWD - I guess 0-60 in around 4.6 like the current M140i and rival Golf R/S3

They will probably bring out a facelift after a year to 18 months with a bit more horsepower, 0-60 shaved to 4.5 or 4.4

Then at some point down the line they will probably bring out a refreshed version (like they did when they switched from the M135i to the M140i) or perhaps even a full 'M' version of the 1 series to compete with the RS3 and A45?

I'm loving my M140i and I'm glad I got to own the classic RWD 6cyl BMW setup in a 1 series, but I'm under no illusions that the new 1 series won't be a better, ultimately faster, and more efficient all round package. It just will be, in my opinion. By the time they're 3 years into production with a few updates and power tweaks I think it will make the current M140i feel a bit dated. But this doesn't mean I'll enjoy my current M140i any less whilst I have it!

Faster to 100km/h? For sure... More efficient? On paper... More fun? Never ever!

I dont get it...

I understand the reason they are going fwd/awd and losing the 6 pot (although not saying i agree with it)

but why create a car that is automatically at the bottom of the section? all of the competitors have more experience at this already and the current S3,( sure they will have done a facelift again by then) has 310bhp, the A45 has 380 (probably 400bhp by then) THe Golf R is the same as the S3 and even the LEon cupra with fwd has 300bhp.

What are they playing at! other than forcing people into "proper" m Cars i guess..

On a side note... with more power and a hugely bettered interior i would be interested in the AWD 1 series...

be warned anyone thinking about changing their car next year, spoke to a few dealers today and the residuals on the M140 have fallen through the floor.

not heard anything about residuals dropping, why would they drop all if a sudden? my m140 has a better gmfv on pcp than a 335d x drive

Interesting.

I wonder if the is the local dealer talking rubbish.

Normally the residuals on an out going model remain good until the new replacement arrives.

I'm assuming the new m130ix won't come out immediately.

I got left for dust last night by a 18 plate Leon Cupra down some country roads, okay he may have been a better driver or had bigger balls, but i couldn't keep up with him AT ALL, loss of traction etc. made me realise what sort of car i need (and how crap i am at driving possibly)

James(Pickles)
I think this shows that the FWD/AWD suits the road conditions we face most of the time in the UK. Cold and damp roads are no place for high speed cornering in a powerful RWD car unless you are a highly skilled driver. If i lived in a hot country i would have never purchased a Leon Cupra or an Audi RS5!

I don't think there are that many that are too fussed about 4x4, so long as it isn't an under-steering POS.
