Was looking at putting my m140 up for sale but prices are shocking

Post by Class2ldn » Mon Apr 16, 2018 3:35 pm

Well was looking at getting an m2 as found a very good deal, unfortunately I'm still around 5k in negative equity apparently.
I knew I'd be in negative after only a year but 5k negative sounds shocking for a trade in . Looked on AT and year old m140i at a dealer is around 23k.
Mine's very well specced I'd say but I just think that prices have dropped quite a bit in a year. For a trade in that's nearly 9k in a year yet the gfv is 14.5k after 4 years.
I know the depreciation slows down after this but even still im gutted it's so low.
Oh well have to wait and see what the comp pack m2 brings as I couldn't get near my settlement even on a private sale

What sort of discount did you get new? TRL? How many miles?

No wasn't trl, can't remember the discount but I did only put 500 in as a deposit, like I say I knew I'd be down but not that much. Don't think I've ever been in negative by that much after a year, maybe another year will slow it down a bit, just a shame when you see a great deal but can't do it because of the current car lol

Really? Still seems a lot but maybe im just being too hopeful. Don't get wrong it's a great car and I love it but for the offer I was getting on the m2 it was a no brainer.
Ah well you win some you lose some I guess lol

tell me about it mate , the depreciation does seem savage at times in the first 12 months..... i think people see the engine and power output and expect them to be expensive to run but i dont think they are too bad especially if your doing a lot of motorway miles.

would the value of the m lites go up in the summer months ?

I think for the performance they are very good value especially in running costs etc. I get more mpg then my mates diesel kuga and he pays 420 a month for that lol.
Think I'm more gutted because it's put the spanner in the works on the m2 deal.

First year depreciation is always the worst. You probably paid ~ £6k in VAT and then the car depreciated even after heavy discounts.

The M2 Comp pack will be more expensive for sure and very unlikely to be discounted from launch.

Even now with slightly worse deals available you can still buy a m140i shadow edition auto for 29500 brand new so at a year old how much would you expect that car to be worth ?
That’s the issue with heavily discounted cars you can’t have it both ways.
It isn’t a great situation to be in if you want to change early but but I echo what’s been said above ,5k negative equity after 12 months with very little deposit it pretty good

I was looking at the deals available and using TRL's figures worked out the difference between a well specced m240 and an m2 was not very much at all.

That was including in the quote all the bits that are standard on the m240

Like I say the 140 is a great car so I'm not unhappy with it just always the case when you can get better for not much extra cost but there's always something that gets In the way lol.
Might just hold out until the comp pack gets reduced , by that time it won't be so bad on my car.
Not sure id be buying brand new again though.

Nothing new, always well known that a car depreciates heavily the moment you drive it off the forecourt.

If you plan on changing cars regularly, it's better to get nearly new (under 3 years) so that initially hit has already been soaked up.

Yeah well that would have been the way with the m2 which is why it's a great deal.

I’m looking to buy a M240i with the performance pack, one for sale on AT by a private seller at the minute he’s asking 3.5k more than the main dealer for the same car.

I offered him around the same as the bmw dealer as I preferred his car due to the colour, anyway he won’t entertain it due to negative equity. My offer was way over what his trade in value would be. Even tried pointing out he was asking 2k more than you can get a pre reg high spec FL car for from the main dealer but nope.

I hate negative equity. The gfv seems brutal on the 2 series. Getting to the stage of just buying an easier to find Audi 😂

I suppose what I’m trying to say is year one depreciation is brutal

It's the cheap PCP deals that kill the second hand value of cars.
Why buy used when it's nearly the same overall cost to PCP.
