M140i vs 911 Carrera 4S(2011)

Post by MrDip » Thu May 10, 2018 11:40 pm

My buddy just bought a 2011 385hp 911 Carrera 4S with pdk.
It's in great condition and has only done about 20,000 miles. My M140 is stock rwd on MPS4 tires.
We have done a few pulls from standstill and rolling starts on B roads with smooth but old and not very grippy asphalt. So I am quite surprised that I have managed to pull away from him every time, considering he has 4wd, 305mm rears and a bit more power. The two cars weigh about the same so I guess it's down to more torque in the M140.
Love this car even more now :)

The M140i shouldn't be beating a 997 4s.

A lot of people claiming big power figures and scalps driving the M140i. I've still not seen a standard M140i going down the drag strip proving that level of performance.

I posted this because I was surprised, the 997 just got Porsche Approved Warranty so there is nothing wrong with it. I'm not claiming big power figures, this is just what happened. I welcome you come with us for a drive if you happen to be in Stockholm this summer.

So according to specs, the 997 4s pdk does 0-100kph in 4.7sec = 0,1 slower than the m140 rwd auto. Go figure.

I had a mates 991 C4S (2013) for a year and at lower speeds, M140i is “faster”. This is because the M140i has more torque. But in the real world, on a twisty road, with respect to driver feedback, the 911 is a far superior car - as you would expect.

Exactly that^ all good and well in a straight line. Put them on a track and the 140i will be left behind
Now: 2006 130i with even more goodies ;)
Gone: 2008 116i with goodies :)

Interesting but is only part of the story imho. The M140 is a great car for the money but I'd take the 911 every time.

I was at the lights alongside a 355 the other day and as they turned green I slowly pulled away. He put the power down but just as he built up some speed a golf GTi came flying up his backside to give him a go lol.

I'm sure the GTi could give an old 355 a bit of a run but......

This is the problem with stated BHP figures. All you see in the press etc is the peak figure, which could be at the red line and a car could be useless until it reaches those revs.

What really matters on the road is the torque curve. The beauty (IMO) of the M140i is the fact it hits high torque from such low revs, which gives it the jump over cars that need to get their engines spinning.

Yes on the track this is less important because you drive in the power band, but the majority of us use these cars fundamentally on the road.

M140i vs 911 Carrera 4S(2011)

Post by Paul CS » Fri May 11, 2018 9:00 am

I’m being totally honest now. For day to day use, given I’m not a driving god and other real life factors, the 911 taught me how good the 140 is and a much better car for me. Life would not be better with a 911 in my life.

Not for the facelift 385bhp version.

The Porsche engine thrives on high RPM. Around 7-8000. I doubt the car you raced was launched itself at such a high RPM. So the BMW would be in the higher torque band sooner and more effective from a standing start.

So now we are comparing a family hatch with a big turbo strapped on to one of the most iconic sports cars of all time, who cares what is faster in a drag race, the 911 is in a different league.
Now - E92 M3, DCT, Comp Pack, Alpine White.

Gone - 2016 M135i

Why does everybody get so worked up over posts like these, it's just a bit of craic on the road. I'll have a play with anything and everything remotely exciting on the road just for a bit of fun and curiosity.

Of course the 911 is the car everybody would choose out of the two but on the road in the circumstances of the OP the M140i was the quicker car. No need to get knickers in a twist about it. Chill out it's Friday :D

Nobody is getting worked up from what I see, just responding friendly to the topic the OP started.

We should just have one thread like the Golf R boys have. It's really popular and commands much respect with all the boy racer stories of beating Lamborghinis, Ferraris and every hypercar in between. It helps brand image massively.

Everyone should just enjoy their car and not try too hard to justify it.

I had a bit of a play with a M135i on a dual carriageway a while back, in between us was a 911 who thought he would get involved and give us a spanking...after a short while he gave up and moved over. Read into it what you want but I'm just stating what happened.

On another not I had a play with an S3, both cars near identical and all was fine until an M5 appeared and put us both to shame. All good fun when these encounters involve drivers who don't go over the top and drive stupidly.
