Handbrake not working!

Post by godzilla » Thu May 24, 2018 5:58 pm

Had some work done today with the car on a slight ramp and now the handbrake doesn’t work at all!
Tried ratcheting the lever up and releasing it as I read they are self-adjusting, but it hasn’t tightened at all. No braking even with the lever all the way up.

Worse still, I assumed 1st or reverse gear would hold it, but parked it on a slightly sloping parking bay just now and it very gradually rolls forward even in gear! Luckily I was sat in the car, but the movement was so slow you can barely feel it.

So what happened? Could the cable have been pulled out of its mounting when it was parked on the ramp?

Probably the tensioning spring has unhooked itself.

This is a pic from an E60, but it is the same on Fxx chassis. Lift the gaiter round the handbrake and check if the little U shape hook is in the correct position, yellow arrow below.

Thanks. I’ll get that checked. Quite worrying reverse won’t hold it on even a mild slope, about 1:10! I thought these were relatively high compression engines for a turbo?

What work were you having done. It might give us a better idea what could be the cause of the failure.

Nothing that would affect the handbrake.
I think it must be the tensioner spring as it has just suddenly gone.

No idea, perhaps the VANOS settles in a ‘low compression’ state?

So Berry BMW Heathrow got this sorted in double quick time thanks to some pushing from TRL.
I put in my new Blue Shadow update in the Member's Section, but rather incredibly, the handbrake has a "service mode" where it basically disconnects itself if it's been used too hard. Which a) mine hasn't been, no handbrake turns here, and b) why would that ever be useful in a "service" situation?

Anyway, basically as NISFAN suspected, they had to reattach the tensioner spring, then they readjusted it from the rear drums, so now it's nice and tight.
