Performance Driver 'Track' Day 6th May 17@Millbrook with CAT Driver training

Post by DigitalRogue » Tue Jan 10, 2017 8:21 pm

Due to the popularity it looks as if both days can be filled.
Having spoken with Admin I have been given the ok to post, as i need to gauge interest in a BabyBMW car club day at Millbrook Proving Ground courtesy of CAT Driver training.

I have attended a couple of courses run by CAT over the years and they represent great value for money considering the wealth of knowledge and expertise they bring to the table and the level of tuition you receive whilst experiencing what Millbrook has to offer.

I know a few guys have posted about the BMW experience day and I thought it would be an opportunity to speak with CAT to offer an alternative, as with this course you learn in your own car.

We need a minimum of 3 people to confirm but ideally would like to get 6 names to secure a further discount.

Put me down as a reserve for now! Let me get the car (01/03) and get settled in with it and if there's a space available I'd be up for it!

If you want in on the 6th, Chris wants either date so a space is available as the others haven't responded yet and we need to get deposits in to secure both dates.

I'm not qualified for this (not had a BMW for several years) but I did want to just add that having visited and driven at Millbrook several times, if you are at all into cars, you'll love it!

Taking the list in order:

- mile straight: this is an experience! I managed about 165 mph before having to hit the brakes (hard!) in a V12 Vantage S. It feels narrow towards the end, which highlights the sense of speed (and the urgency of the braking when you finally do it - it runs into a tight, banked turnaround bowl at the end)
- high speed circuit (banked circle): I believe there is an on-site speed limit of 130 mph on the outer lane. At this speed you feel very close to the outside barrier but once you acclimatise, it feels very easy.
- Alpine route: famous as the scene of the DB-S rollover in Casino Royale. Tight, twisty, few straights, opportunity to get some air. I have driven this circuit in a Gallardo, Huracan and Vanquish but the most fun I had was in a Focus ST (so I imagine the M-lites will love it)
- handling circuit: I have not driven this, but have had a couple of passenger laps with race drivers in a Ford GT40 and V8 Vantage. Like an overgrown kart circuit, there's no let-up!
- steering pad: their name for a skid pan. A concrete apron with a water cannon in the centre. Will chew up your tyres if you let it (I watched a Koenigsegg CCR ruin a rear pair in under an hour)

All that is amazing, but on top of that you will almost certainly see various development mules and protoypes floating about the place too. Some you'll recognise, others will be so disguised you won't have a clue.

It is a petrolhead's nirvana - enjoy!

Sounds like you've enjoyed some great corporate days Weasley ... but to reassure those coming ... you're coming for a training day ... so there'll be no chewing up of tyres on the Steering Pad, nor 165 mph on the Mile Straight and only up to 130 mph on the High Speed Circuit if you're comfortable to do so. The brain takes over for some and physically stops your foot pressing on the accelerator, even though you might want to. You're in the hands of coaches who will nurture and develop you at the pace you're comfortable with. As many clients say, you're challenged and stretched, not pushed.

We're 26 people off issuing our 4000th certificate ... both you and your car are in safe, qualified hands.

Thank-you Jo,

I wasn't completely clear on what the day entails but this sounds fine. All going well, I will be looking into the other possible days/half-days you offer. I've got experience in driving other sports cars on track days, but this will be a first in my own car so was slightly apprehensive but I'm looking forward to it.

I was not trying to put people off, far from it! All the driving I have done there has been in the hands of very capable instructors, under the oversight of the Millbrook safety team. As you say, you go as fast as you feel comfortable. One of the most rewarding (if not ultimately exciting) bits I did at Millbrook was in the 'city' roads section at speeds of <20 mph, where awareness and control were more valued than speed.

As I said, enjoy!
