Rheingold without ICOM?

Hello,
So I have this OBD2 ENET Ethernet Cable I'm sure you all have and use for regular coding on my F20. I've been reading about Rheingold ISTA-D/ISTA+ and thought it'd be good to be able to use the diagnostics tools for my car every now and then.

In most guides however, there are big notices saying an ICOM is required for programming with Rheingold. Having not used the program before, what does this really mean? Can I still use my OBD2 cable for regular diagnostics (assuming I don't do any programming via Rheingold), or is an ICOM required for all cases?

Appreciate all answers!

E-Net cables can be used with ISTA/D although I have not done that myself.
Thanks for your reply. Yeah that's what I read too, however I'm just worried if at any point the car may get bricked for not using the ICOM, depending on what is done on Rheingold.
