E8* coding - still NCS and Virtual Computer or another option yet?

Post by docwra » Mon Feb 19, 2018 2:20 pm

Ive just fitted BMW Performance seats in my E82 135i and the car is telling me the airbag/seatbelt tensioners are now not working, Id read before fitting that this was likely to happen and can be coded out.

When I previously coded out my e-diff I used the software that came with the D-CAN cable, so effectively had a virtual computer running NCS Expert. This worked fine, but took up a lot of my laptop's Hard Drive and when I recently reformatted I obviously lost everything. If I can avoid id rather not stick 10GB of software back onto the machine so is there any way of coding without all of this?

I actually bought a version of NCS from NCS-expert.com that is supposed to run without VC but it is loading up incorrectly, one of the .rar files is corrupted and one of DLL's apparently isnt written for Windows, even when I change compatibility settings.

I know I can pay someone to code remotely but when Ive got the D-CAN and am comfortable with the coding itself it seems to make more sense to give myself the ability. :)

NCS is still the most capable tool for coding the older cars. The issue is that it doesn't work well with newer/64 bit Windows hence the virtual machine.

Getting a cheap old laptop with Vista 32 bit just for coding is a good option.

How strange, I have mine running on a new'ish laptop with Windows 10.

No issues whatsoever :)

See, this is what Id read, that it can be used on 64 Bit as well, you just need to change compatibility settings on one of the executables.

Ive gone back to the software resaler to ask them what the score is, if that doesnt work then it might be cheap laptop time I guess.

Bump, any more suggestions? Wibbles is saying he will need a 32 bit machine at this end to do it remotely and BMW will only code the car back to standard.
I really dont want to have to buy a 32 bit laptop to change one setting, surely there must be other alternative people or software to do it?

Either get a PC that’s up to the job or take the car to someone to code.

10GB space really isn’t a lot of space nowadays.

I can probably code this now without having NCS installed on the local machine at the customers end. I do all the F-Series cars like this now and it's way less grief for my customers.

If you are willing to be a guniea pig and work with me for a couple of hours to get it working I'll do the coding free of charge.

Thanks for that Wibbles but I contacted Cable Shack and Jimmy sent over a link to 64v Bit version of BMW Tools. Not connected to car yet but it all seems to be working fine, cheers to Jimmy and Cable Shack :)

Now, anyone got a list of the codes? Pretty aure I just need to add RECA+ for the performance seats but if anyone knows different ..........
