2019 New 1 Series

Post by TRL » Thu May 11, 2017 10:03 pm

The next-gen BMW 1-series is coming and CAR’s spies have snapped the new hatch testing on public roads in Germany. Given the current-generation 1-series' recent facelift, we won't see its successor for a little while yet - CAR understands that mid-2019 is when it'll reach the market.

Most significantly, the new '1' hatch will no longer be rear-wheel-drive. The next generation will use the UKL2 platform that underpins the BMW 2-series Active/Gran Tourer and X1, along with the current Mini Clubman and Countryman. All of these models are engineered with optional four-wheel drive where applicable, so expect to see xDrive models populate the range alongside bread-and-butter front-drive versions.

Although rear-drive handling dynamics have previously been considered something a USP for the 1-series, a key advantage of the front-drive platform is more efficient packaging, so an increase in interior space and potential for a larger boot is on the cards. It should also mean that the large transmission tunnel of the current-gen '1' is slimmed down, meaning more rear legroom.

The big problem is the shape of the car (unless it changes) is a slab sided anonymous box. It could come from any manufacturer.

A 4 pot turbo AWD car doesn't really bother me to be honest, but the car looks very drab.

need to try harder BMW.

Are they going to significantly cheaper retail than the current RWD cars? Presumably they're less complicated to assemble, and with fewer components?

Well, dimensionally it definitely won't fit in sideways.

Yep I think the current A45 AMG paves the way for the next 1 series. The 2019 1 series was probably signed off back in 2014 with minor tweaks to
keep abreast of the tech as time has passed. But safe to say that everyone expects it to be a rather bland hatchback with transverse 4pot driving the front wheels, and for the M130i/M140i/M145i (what will the badge it as????) there will be a tapped on 4wd system that no doubt is front wheel drive most of the time...passing power to the rear as and when required. Yuk!
Based on the current MINI/BMW UKL2 Platform we can only hope that BMW M dept get their hands on it and realise we need something special to tempt us out of our 6cyl RWD wagons...

UKL2 platform
Mini Clubman (F54) (2016-present)
BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (F45) (2014-present)
BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer (F46) (2015-present)
BMW X1 (F48) (2015)
Mini Countryman (F60) (2017)
BMW 1 Series Sedan (F52) (2017)

Badging does create a challenge. If the engine is, as believed, to be a development of the current B48n20i twin power turbo what can they badge it as?
Presently the 20i is badged up to a 30i (think 230i/430i) this being an upgrade from the 228i/428i... whilst I get that the badge refers to the
"projected BHP" that an atmo 30i would develop, can we really expect it to be badged M140i with a 20i engine?
I guess that the 740e has set the scene, as it has a 20i engine (254hp) supplemented with electric motors to produce 322hp/369 lb ft.

Speculatively if the 2019 car is lighter as expected, has 4wd and wants to keep up with the competition then it will need to have circa 350 hp.
and would such a boosted engine even be offered with a manual box??? ........... now there is a can of worms to open!

Do you expect them to be cheaper than the F Series?

I'd imagine pricing wise will be comparable to now. Merc and Audi will happily sign you up to a 40k plus finance deal for a similarly powered (front biased) FWD system so it doesn't make business sense for BMW to back track on their current pricing structure imo.

Most customers assume a premium price for a so called premium brand so regardless of the driven wheels I sadly doubt much if any price reductions across the range.

I take it I've got just over a year to finally get into a current M140, just need to wait until my current negative equity is a bit more manageable...!

I reckon it will come in around the same price as the outgoing model.... they may however remove any tactical support on launch of the new car.
that would reduce discounts by £3250 straight away! :(

I'm going to miss the 6 cylinder and RWD :( I keep looking at the 3/4 series, but they just keep getting bigger and I love the 'wieldy' size of the 1/2 series. I don't know if my finances would stretch to it, but the 5 cylinder Audi RS3 keeps drawing me in, it's just the handling, if it's like the previous generation I don't think I'd like it ( I gather it is slightly better though). THe A45 looks great fun, but the engine and exhaust sound dull and loud, really loud, but awfully dull.

Maybe a secondhand C63 or a Corvette will keep me happy :) Perhaps there will be a mega run out model for the 1er or 2er? :) :)

Tony

Just looking at your list and noticed you've not included the new X2 which is due out later this year early next unless I'm mistaken and presumably that will also be FWD?

A45 is dull then
I love the sound of the C63 but do you know what, i was in my X3 35d the other day when one floored it next to me on the M Way.
he made such a racket but he was hardly moving forwards.... dont think his wheels were spinning. really weird.

Any ideas on when the LCI2 will be available to order (for M140i/M240i) please Tony?
