BCS Powervalve Review 1 Month on and 2000 Miles

Post by AndyKnight » Fri Mar 04, 2016 4:22 pm

I've now had my cat back BCS PowerValve exhaust for about a month (2000 miles driven since fited) so I thought it was now the right time to write a proper review having lived with it on motorways, A roads and around town.

Firstly when you have the accelerator pinned to the floor in sport mode or above it sounds epic to me. I have heard better (marginally) but at a vastly higher price. In my opinion the sound is spot on and gives me a smile every time I accelerate. Driving along a B road, blasting out of a village and hearing the sound bounce off the last few walls/buildings as you exit sounds fantastic. Sometimes I wish I could hear more of the exhaust (it's by no stretch of the imagination quiet) but even with the window down the car insulation does too good a job of shielding me from the noise. I take solice in knowing that anybody nearby is enjoying an audible treat.

The pops and bangs for me are hard to hear most of the time which is great as personally I don't especially like them (great for showing off but annoying if they happen all the time). They only appear in sport or sport plus just like most other systems on the over-run. I suspect a full system with sports cat or cat removal would have yielded more bangs so for me the cat back is perfect on this front.

Comfort mode on the motorway is also great at 70 mph however between 60-68mph in conjunction with the engine under load (slightly up-hill etc) and being in 8th gear there is some what I can only describe as exhaust boom. It's definitely not a drone as the system design takes care of that perfectly, it's more of a loud exhaust sound and is not there when on a flat road. Switching to sport mode instantly removes this sound as the car shifts up a gear or 2 leaving the RPM of the engine higher up which reduces the engine load. This is a really minor issue and only normally happens when i'm on the m6 going up hill and stuck behind a van/lorry that can only do a slower speed. It's certainly not enough for me to worry about, it's not un-pleasant however it does increase cabin noise.

The system fit is excellent, the exit pipes are exactly where they were set when the system was fitted with perfect gaps between bodywork and metal.

Would I buy it again, hell yes. It's done everything that was advertised and makes me feel 20 again when I feel the urge.

Good review, I don't think there is any better out there when taking the price / quality ration in consideration :headbanger:

I was the same, but it genuinely transforms the car, dealer serviced it twice with no issues and the engine is very robust

I did my mods about a year into ownership

Are you referring to the collet to keep the valve open permenantly?

I actually like the way it comes as standard, ultra quiet when you want it to be (family in the car) and nice and throaty when you don't.

Indeed, I found it made my right foot more heavy as I often wanted to hear the valves open. But standard it certainly suits the jekyll and hyde nature of the beast.

How do you like the sound with the Sports Downpipe fitted?

All you need now is a JB4. ;-)
