M2 winter wheels/tyres advice needed for UK car

Post by sburns » Fri Dec 09, 2016 2:19 pm

Hi all
I have a Min grey M2 that was delivered in Jun16. I normally run winter tyres as i find them so much fun as they offer such progressive handling in wet when compared to summer tyres in wet where grip is either on/off. I have to confess to liking the sleeper look as well and as such a ran the 17" Black steel wheels on my old M135i for winter which made it look like a 116 (whih i like) but also allowed me to run into invisible pot holes without wincing. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=m135i ... i5RzQWM%3A

I have had teh tyre shop try to fit these steel 17" tyres to my M2 but have found that the M2 brakes are way too big. I will put these up for sale once they ome back from tyre shop.

So, i have 3 choices that i would welcome advice on from M2 experts:

1. Ideal choice would be to find out which 18" black steel wheels would definitely fit the M2 and run dedicated winter rubber on these. Does anyone know which would suit M2 for clearance? Once known, i would also need to know what tyres to fit too, would be happy with square set up.

2. Second choice would be to simply fit winter rubber onto existing alloys and take the risk of more winter damage. I am not sure if i could choose a square set up or if i would need to run 245/35/19 front and 265/35/19 rears as per current or could i go square with same 245 rears?.

3. Third choice would be to buy official winter rims (these are silver M V Spoke 640M which i dont like the look of) with 235 40 18 95v at front and either 235 40 18 95v or 255 35 18 94v at rear - bw recommended is Michelin Pilot Alpine 4. Very pricey at c. £2300 so dont want to do this, would prefer to stick with summers.

Many Thanks for your help

OP,

If you are wanting steel winter wheels, buy 4 off BMW space saver for X5/X6 - 5J x 18 with Et 14mm - BMW part # 36116768861.

You would need to spigot rings to reduce centre bore from 74mm down to 72.5mm [M2] then you could get them banded to increase width [+ 75-100mm] and offset [25-30mm]

Or if you want 19", Land Rover / Range Rover have same PCD and CB as BMW M2 so you could opt for 19" steelies and band them as above.......

This chap has fitted some to his Mk4 Golf R32....

If I were doing it I'd do the face grey and the barrel/rim silver - similar to this

Many thanks for your help and advice Blind Pugh, much appreciated. What a god send!

I hadn't thought about 19" winter steelies. They maybe perfect. You mentioned Land Rover items. Would you be kind enough to send a link to help me identify them better plus any associated items required - for example would it be the same banders linked below?
I am ashamed to say I don't know what PCD And CB stands for!

Many thanks

PCD - pitch circle diameter
CB - centre bore

To ensure either 18" or 19" steel wheels fit suggest networking with x5/x6/Range Rover owners to trial fit a spare steel wheel onto yr m2

Hi there. In the end I saved some money and went for winter tyres on my existing rims. I opted for a square set up all round meaning the rears are a little stretched.

That said, I haven't had as much fun on 4 wheels as I am with this set up ever before. Dsc off allows small drifts on demand on well sighted roads that are quite easily controlled. Car has too much body roll but less of an issue in winter to me. Sports cat fitted to mine emits a beautiful sound and the JB4 provides a bit more poke than standard. I love this car so far after 6 months!

However, it does mean I have some 17" black steel wheels fitted with with Nokian winter tyres for sale from my M135i that did 3k miles on my old car last year. I have been looking around on here to find out how to list an item.
