Now wouldn't an engine like that be ideal, nickfrog, for a 2 seat, rwd, roadster, with LSD, weighing in at under a ton?!

:D

True. I drove a GT86 in the wet yesterday btw. A very special experience. It made me feel alive. It gives me hope that some manufacturers haven't given up.

It sounds good in the 2AT as well, though the soundproofing is pretty good. I'm going to write up a little review after a week, but a few things so far:

6 speed auto is lovely - I hardly notice it shifting at all in comfort mode and when you do it's only really the change in revs that indicates the change - not jerking.

The LED lights are simply amazing. As they don't do xenon lights as an option now, I would spec these again. Full beam is like daylight with the light on the blue side of white.

The best feature so far - the HUD. I've hardly looked at the instrument cluster and if you like to try and stay legal it's a boon showing the speed limit and your current speed side-by-side in digital. The nav directions also appear on it, as well as warning messages. It would now be the first thing on the spec list.

Who the fluck decided that beige carpets with the, admittedly lovely, beige interior was a good idea must have been on drugs. Unless you put slippers on and leave your shoes outside the car (!) they're instantly filthy. Mad. I've ordered some dark mats to replace them.

Eco-pro mode is like driving an oil tanker. I suppose it might be handy on very long motorway journeys, but I'd consider it dangerous anywhere else as the acceleration is dead. Comfort is absolutely fine, sport is like a normal car ;)

It could probably do with a few more covered cubby holes around the cabin, especially for a family car.

I'll mention more after a week, but I won't be able to be too technical about the drive as I'm not a racer and have gradually slowed down since my 911 days.

Or maybe the MINI is an AT in disguise. I appreciate that platform sharing is a difficult concept to grasp but who gives a shyte for a family car ? It ain't a single-seater or a track slag.

For a £100+ more you could have had the sport auto which is the 8 speed box not for the paddles but for the effortless gear changing. Still a great car and hope you enjoy.

Looks great, I really like them!

Think you picked this up about an hour before I picked my M135 on Saturday from Berry Heathrow!

We could have had a near miss in the crowded car park ;) I was a bit busy when I was there.

It isn't the same 8 speed box as in any other BMW though.

It's a transverse box from Aisin not the ZF8HP. Aisin boxes are usually very smooth but lack ZF's crispness.

Not driven one in a 2AT though.
