130i exhaust options

Post by Stevec33 » Thu Feb 22, 2018 6:51 am

I was wondering what options people have tried with changing their exhaust on the 130i? Ive seen the bmwp one but it seems a lot of money and you could get a good quality custom made cat back system done for the same or less money probably? Also has anyone tried doing decat or sports cat? Any gains? I was thinking if i went down the custom route I could maybe get a sports cat done too. Thanks

Just do a little search on the forum... there are some threads talking about this, Mark sent you a link to one of them. There are videos on them and pictures explaining.

Backbox: BMWP, 135i
Midsilencer: YPipe or custom made YPipe on standard silencer.

Thanks, i have looked on the forum allready and seen the posts about the 135i exhausts, sounds like a bit of a faff to find and get one fitted, and again no cheaper than a full custom system, which was what i was really asking about if anyone had done. Thanks

Decatting the headers on the 130 exhaust offers no gains over standard really. As has been documented on this thread before. So that's a waste of time.

There are no more cats in the 130 exhaust other than the headers so no gains to be had from deleting those as they dont exist.

To get noise, as a minimum you need to remove the mid silencer. This can be done by a custom section from the headers back or you can buy a mid pipe from bastuck that does it for you for £170.

Backbox wise the 135 exhaust is tried and tested, as is the BMWP. I do agree the bmwp back box is expensive and it doesn't do as much to the sound as a mid silencer delete does.

That's why people go down the route of having a 135i backbox fitted - very similar result to BMWP, 1/3 of the cost. Lots of custom sections have been made, but the 130i does seem sensitive to the tuned length of the center section of the exhaust..... which is why I would keep the standard mid pipes back to the y piece if it was me rather than having someone make me a mid section. For example the diameters of the two mid pipes are different for a start, which will be to do with gas flow.

Agree with that 100%. Everything you said.

Is that really true that the Y delete does more for sound than a bmwp backbox??

I think the BMWP sounds great but is a pretty subtle change from the standard back box. In my opinion it is the chrome tips that add the most to the car. They really make it look more special than the pressed original tips. I think on a budget a 135 back box with some custom tips would be pretty sweet.
