I think it's a vacuum relative to the crank pressure. I'm sure there is a scientific term, but when air rushes passed a small opening air is sucked in rather than blown out like you'd expect. Say when there is a small hole in your exhaust it can suck in air and lead to you failing an emissions test.

My understanding of modern engines and in particular engine with variable valve timing such as ours, is that the cams are moved to give next to no overlap on overrun and idle. This helps clean exhaust gases as crankcase gases are prevented from going out of the exhaust.

This can be felt when we lift off and notice very little engine braking.I'm interested in just how much oil vapour is caught. Be sure to report back Marco.

How folks drive and what mode they drive in will effect the rate at which deposits build up in inlet tracts and onto inlet valves.

Giving the car's engine a good workout once in while, in any mode, is one of the cheaper/simplier ways of deferring the inevitable gunk deposits with DI engines. I go by my own experience having had a DI n54 engine 3 series for 5 years.

In order of cost, other measures may benefit too, such as:-

Frequent oil changes;
after market mods like fitting an OOC.

Interesting thread, would using premium fuels all the time (v-power, ultimate etc. that are higher octane and contain more 'cleaning' additives) help reduce this build up?

Not really Hogg, because the fuel is injected into the cylinder and not the intake it will not pass the area where the coking occurs. Old skool fuel injection would benefit tho

Would this benefit Diesel engines as they're obviously direct injection? :-)

Blakey,
it would benefit diesels, as they also suffer with build up, and in the diesels the egr system adds soot to the intake too, hence exacerbating the problem.

I've already bypassed the EGR but I might look into this then... I'll watch & see how Mark gets on :-)

So it's the Burger one, and cost about £130 delivered. Sounds a good deal to me. Will be interested to see it once it's mounted - is there an obvious space under the bonnet for it?

Drivers' side front corner, should slot in rather nicely.

I'll do a separate 'how to' when my car turns up, assuming it fits! :lol:

Good deal. That's nearly half price compared to a UK (North East) supplier.
Fitting guide here (scroll down to N55 fitment at the bottom).
