Re: Wanted a kit car for far to long

I used to have a Tiger Cat E1 (fortunately a bit nicer than that monstrosity ;) ) and they are great fun. The Tiger's are a good cheaper alternative to Caterham and Westfields if you want to do it on a cheaper budget and to all but those in the know look the same on the road. I used to love it, you'...

I took a photo of it on my phone so I had it referenced there if I ever need it.

Re: 3 year service on M140i

I think at my 3 years it was just the brake fluid change. I just got them to do all that and the first MOT and worked out pretty reasonable price. You never have to take a car back to the place you bought it. Either use a local BMW dealership or trusted independent. As long as they use the right com...

Re: Ghost II

Yeah I had mine removed from the last car and you get stung for the call out charge, which is why I wanted to see if I could get to it myself. The 'difficulty' is simply where they locate it and as it can be anywhere on the canbus, its strength is in the difficulty in finding it. But the item itself...

Re: Ghost II

Interestingly, I sold my M140i last week and before the sale I wanted to get the Ghost off as I didn't want it to hamper the sale with the dealer being put off with steering wheel codes etc. I had an idea where it might be as I'd seen the installer start to attack a certain area of the car as I left...

Re: Ghost II

Don't really need physical barriers, at least with the auto anyway.

The gearbox is locked in park. As soon as you try to engage a gear it shuts the engine. Great system.

Don't get me wrong though, multiple layers of security is the way to go.

Re: Ghost II

I've always loved it. Works very well on the BMW platform and has always been second nature to use it.

Re: BMW HQ now blacklisting self coded cars!

The daft thing is that BMW have written the software into the cars, at the factory, to enable them to be coded. If they didn’t want anything to be changed, it would be simple enough to not have the facility to do so in the first place. The steering geometry is all made to be adjustable, but should ...

Re: What was your first car?

Aaahhh the good old days when we could work on cars I changed the engine on the aforementioned Austin 1100 - was amazed I managed to do that! I remember those days. I changed the head gasket on my Nova 1.2, with hardly any experience, a Haynes manual and socket set. Started first time when done and...

I don't disagree with your last point, but I think the warranty shouldn't be voided for the whole car, or a whole system. It should only be on the bit you messed with. So if you screw your iDrive up tough, but that shouldn't mean the whole system goes.
100% agree with that :)

Re: BMW HQ now blacklisting self coded cars!

The only time people brick components when coding is when they don't do it properly, or they interrupt the upstream/downstream connection. BMW are putting their warranty into the hands of someone that (as far as they are concerned) doesn't know what they are doing and is using tools that aren't BMW...

Re: BMW HQ now blacklisting self coded cars!

I think putting yourself in BMW's shoes I'd side with them to be honest. You have people who aren't experienced at this, and even playing about with basic parameters doesn't mean they may not have messed something up while coding. I know this seems overkill, but from BMW's point of view, why should ...

Re: Should i remap my 135i e82 for pops and bangs

Agree with the above.

A nice exhaust tone with subtle pop's in Sport mode is one thing, but mapping for loud pops and bangs is pretty chavvy now and you just end up looking like you should be driving a cheap Ford that's been driven through Halfords covered in glue.

Re: Trackers and other security systems

The car may be gone but your family are safe and the car is being tracked. Whilst I'm not trying to sprread too much alarm on here I think it important for anyone to give thought to possible situations that can develop and best minimise risks. It's a criticism of the Ghost that I've heard on car fo...

Re: Trackers and other security systems

You have to consider the two options - theft prevention and then theft recovery/insurance. So a tracker and GAP is pretty much the second, but I like to concentrate on the first as the old saying 'prevention is better than cure'. I like a combination of a visual deterrent (steering lock) combined wi...
