Seats - too big!

Post by YLS » Mon Jun 10, 2019 1:30 pm

I'm a narrow person and the seats in my 120d SE are made for a wide person. This is not pleasant when driving the car for fun. I've tried cinching down the seatbelt, which helps a bit, but basically I need a narrower seat. I don't want to change the seat, but are there any aftermarket seat covers/bolsters etc anyone has found that would help to reduce some of the excess space around me in the seat? I'd rather reduce that space than increase my space. Thanks.

Do your seats not have the airbag bolsters? There should be a rocker switch at the front of the side panel.

Agreed, Sports seats with their inflatable bolsters are the obvious answer.

Thanks for the ideas, didn't even know BMW inflatable bolsters existed! More than I'm prepared to spend though, so I'll continue looking. Maybe I don't need a narrower seat, but just a non-slip mat on the seat...

What year is your car and what material/colour seats are fitted?

Sport seats are often available cheaply on ebay... I have a pair of black sport seats from my 2010 135i in fabric/faux leather that would fit and might suit.

I also have a pair of sports seats I want to get rid of. They have heating too if you wanted to retrofit that. I removed some of the wiring underneath to use for airbag/seat cancellation gubbins, but you should have all that on your current seats to swap over. If you’re anywhere near Leeds I’ll help fit them too :)

It's a 2006 e87, fabric seats in black/grey. Definitely don't want (faux) leather thanks, will be sticking (not literally) to the fabric. But thanks for the offers both.

My car is incredibly stingy on the spec, and it has the inflatable love-handle huggers. Have you double checked you don't already have them? It's the only electric switch on my seat, if that's any help.

The BMW Sport seats are great. Had them on my E82 and now on my F22. Being very slim myself they are one of the few seats that
you can get with the inflatable side bolsters that expand enough to clamp you in the seat.

Out of interest have sat in many other cars e.g Mercedes, VW Golf GTi , Hyundia i30N , Audi etc and never managed to
get that feeling of being held firmly in position. Many of these cars have 'sports' seats but I find the side bolsters still
let me move around. Think the high end Mercedes offer this ( like S class).

Tried the new BMW G20 330i with leather sports seats and again you can inflate to a point you feel clamped in.

Fabric BMW sport seats have the main panels in fabric with the sides in SensaTec - BMW speak for faux leather. I'm not sure that a full-fabric sport seat was ever available. Maybe SE seats are all fabric.

They certainly were my friend. Recently found a pair of fronts to match the rest of the interior. Don't prefer leather enough to swap out the whole shebang :)

Annoyingly my eldest booster seat doesn't sit flat so I've only fitted the driver side for now.
