2009 E81 Heater Issue Hot OR Cold

Post by andreasaravis » Thu Nov 09, 2017 1:59 pm

My 2009 116d has a funny thing happening with the heater.

If its on max (28) then it blows hot heat. If i turn it down 0.5 (27.5) then it blows out cold. There is no happy medium, either Hot OR Cold.

Any ideas?

Odd!

Does it chuck out really ice cold air, and does it do it for a really long time, so the cabin actually gets cold, even on 27.5?

I had noticed on mine that turning it down by a small amount lead to it chucking out cold air to adjust the temp at the sensor as quickly as possible, but thats usually when theres a few degrees difference between actual temp and set temp. It also stops when it gets to the new set temp - I'm assuming yours just goes down to outside temp, or cooler with aircon running, even with 27.5 selected?

Its not ice cold air its luke warm.

I very rarely have the aircon on in the winter, but yes at 27.5 no heat comes out at all, only comes out at 28.

I wonder if it could be a faulty cabin sensor. I seem to recall being told the 'max' setting effectively over-rides the system and blasts out heat whatever the sensors say is needed.

I've just taken out the climate control unit and there was an awful lot of dust on the sensor! I've since give it a good clean so i will test it late to if it works.

Did you ever manage to get to the bottom of this problem? My 116i just started doing exactly the same thing. Weirdly all happened after picking it up from getting the recall problems fixed  The garage blame it all on coincidence :censored:

No I haven’t resolved it yet. But as the cold weather will be kicking in soon I would like to get this fixed!

Can anyone help us?

Anyone nearby you can swap the control panel with temporarily? (At least to eliminate it as a source of failure).

A wild one, is your battery all good? Beemer electrics are voltage sensitive. I havent heard of this kind of fault, but anythings possible. What voltage do you get with a cold engine with engine off, and with the engine running?

I’d think most likely is one of the temp sensors.

I’ll have to get the battery voltage tested, but surely this wouldn’t cause the heat issue?

As the winter is coming it would be nice to get this sorted.

Battery voltage can cause all sorts of nonsense with beemers. You can test yourself, as there is a voltmeter built into the hidden menu (just search hidden menu on here, there are instructions in one of the posts).

12v standing and 14.6/7 when running

I love this hidden menu by the way
