Nice one! The wire in the hose trick works really well for this job.

The Mike Miller Old School BMW Maintenance Guide (google it) recommends replacing the differential oil every 30,000miles. I try to stick with that but also do it when I am close to 30 and have the car up in the air for other work.

If you haven't read Mike's guide it is a good read. He was very active in the US BMW owners club and started his own guide when BMW (in their wisdom) introduced the concept of "lifetime fluids".

Did you have any trouble torquing down the drainplug?

What torque setting did you use?

Did the wire method yesterday and it worked great, good tip Got just over 900ml out.

Didn't torque it down either as I don't have the right socket for my torque wrench, so I gave it a very light tap with a hammer to seat it nicely.

Nice one fritz, did you use magnetic plug or put the standard 14mm Allen plug back in? It's only a small torque figure anyways a little nip will be fine just check it's not leaking. I've tightened hundreds of plugs and never torqued them when you do enough you get a feel for them

No I didn't get a magnetic one in the end, wanted to get it done this weekend so didn't have time to order one. Plus the oil that came looked very good to be honest so I saw no problem with a standard one

With regular changes I don't think a magnetic plug will matter tbh. What oil did you use?
