Bilstein b4 vs b4s

Post by Trojantrow » Sun Jul 22, 2018 12:25 pm

Dicided on OE replacement bilstein b4 dampers for my msport 120d.

I know this has been done before but there's so much conflicting information.

Some people say the normal b4 fit perfectly with the msport springs. And say the b4s is too short and can't get the spring on.

Put simply I want what I should have...not what will work..just what's the best for handling.. yes I want to improve ride but only because the ones I have are f*cked. I beleive.

Already have z4 bump stops to fit as well.

Any help and part numbers would be good..as that's confusing as well. Cheers.

I put standard B4 on all round two years and 20k miles ago, they fitted perfectly and have had no issues at all.
They were the same length as my original M Sport shocks and along with BMW Performance bumpstops improved ride and handling noticeably.
Search my old posts, I’ve posted the part numbers used before.

I’m sure someone here will have the same experience fitting the B4S - so I really don’t think it’s critical.

This is the thing you see. I'm glad you have said that they are the same length as the msport struts..because that makes me think the the b4s is an msport upgrade. And the normal b4 is the actual OE replacement. For both standard and msport.

It makes sense seen as it's the spring length that obviously determines how low the car is.. which is different on msport and standard.

So maybe the b4s is valved differently and firmer. Which I wouldn't be mad about.i want firm. But a better ride also. I know. Don't ask for much..

Mine has done 90000miles. Surely what ever I get will be loads better.

Check out this thread for more info - I posted part numbers and a pic on this one.
I changed mine at over 120k so maybe the improvement was just replacing knackered shocks but I’m convinced the B4 (or B4s) is a better shock than OEM.

I remember reading on M3Cutters that B4s (and possibly B4) are valved 10% firmer than stock.

I believe it was Evolve who quoted this.
130i LE | BMWP Exhaust | Bilstein B4S/Eibach Pro | Whiteline Inserts | M3 LCAs | M3 Transmission Mounts | SSK - Here
130i LCI | BMWP Brakes, Exhaust, Intake and Interior | Eibach Pro Springs | Whiteline Inserts | M3 LCAs - Gone

Proof I guess that a quality damper can improve ride, even if a techincally it’s a little firmer.

I can't wait to get them fitted...was selling the car yesterday.. don't feel I've given it a fair chance.
