1 series - Clutch studder + DMF Issue ?

Post by User214 » Sun Aug 19, 2018 11:42 am

Hello everyone,

My bmw 1 series 2011 118D has had a clutch studder issue for a while. Was told this was a common issue and to ignore it, looking into it it shouldn't be ignored.... It's done 110K on the clock and never had it replaced before so running on factory.

However the last few days the car while in neutral now vibrates which has only just started to happen.

Its the weekend so only managed to get one quote for £815 for the a sach clutch kit +dmf replacement inc labour.

Going to try get another quote from a BMW specialist on monday to compare.

Before I go out and get it repaired is there anything else worth checking it could be beforehand or would it just be the clutch/DMF needing replacement ?

Dmf (+clutch assembly) is favourite.

Yeah of course.

Does it sounds like that’s the issue ? Wasn’t sure on paying out diagnostics when it seems to be the case.

Hello and welcome

As Marco says, it very likely to be the DMF/clutch.

Any experienced and sensible mechanic will be able to confirm whether that is the problem in about 1 minute...or less.

The normal place I go asked for £90 diagnostics to even find what the issue was.

Could always pop it somewhere to get it confirmed etc before hand

Thanks for the reply’s also.

I’m also under the impression it’s not safe to drive incase it causes gearbox damage is that correct?

Consider using a garage that charges for diagnostic time, rather than fixed fee. DMF failure is blindingly obvious; so assuming 1 minute of sitting in the car, starting, engaging gear and letting the clutch in, etc., that makes their hourly rate £5400! You might be generous and allow 5 minutes...

Being less facetious, you might have a failed gearbox or engine mount, but that's not nearly so likely.

They charge £90 per hour and they do min 1 hour diagnostics I believe but I'm chasing them up monday for the qoute, hopefully they can do a quick opinion rather than 1 hour.

I’ve got a 116d 2009 on 101000miles

My clutch judders in first sometimes (didn’t do it as much when I did the cdv mod)

But!

I need a new dual mass flywheel, but the clutch is still ok! I can hear my dmf vibrating slightly, which you also may hear aswell.

Dmf do not last forever and your car doing more miles then mine points to it.

By all means ask them for a diagnostic if it makes you feel better but I would ask them to take that off the cost of doing the job.

Also £90 is very steep just for a diagnostic! I need to change my job if there getting away with that price!

Hi..

Had same as you.. juddery clutch.. also could feel vibrations at idle..

Did the cdv delete.. slightly improved it..

Mine also had a grating noise if you let your foot rest on the clutch pedal.. nothing with foot off nothing with pedal fully depressed..

Bit the bullet and got new clutch and dmf... 1000x better.. all symptoms disappeared..

£862 all in.. was not cheapest quote £650, and by far, not the most expensive £1200 + vat..

Depends how long you want to keep the car and how much you don't want to break down with no clutch in the middle of nowhere.. or have the whole lot disintegrate and cause a sh*t load of extra expense!!
