135i Smelling very rich.

Post by the obese penguin » Tue Feb 12, 2019 2:23 pm

Hi

My 135i has started smelling very rich and not sure what could be the cause.. Car has downpipes with stage one MHD. Been fine for last 6 months with this set up. Scanned with MHD and got following codes.

2a87 Exhaust Vanos
3100 Boost pressure control-deactivated.
29f3 Fuel low pressure sensor- electric..
Cleared them all and the 29f3 one comes back always but that has always been there for months with zero problems before. Also had some erroneous readings from electronic oil measure recently too.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm fairly limited in my knowledge for this specific area, so others may be able to help further. I'm guessing this is an N54?

For '3100 Boost pressure control-deactivated.', this suggests it's been in reduced boost (limp mode) at some stage. Have you felt a loss of power or seen any error come up on the dash?

For '2a87 Exhaust Vanos', this may be the root of your problem. A simple step could be to remove both of them, clean and swap them around and see if that resolves the problem. If an error code comes back (and if you swap them it would be on the intake), you could replace (suggest genuine BMW).

Finally '29f3 Fuel low pressure sensor- electric.'. I'm not sure on this one, could just be a sensor issue (i.e. just need replacing). I wouldn't ignore it long term though.

Have you logged your AFR's to check they are rich and in what circumstances the car is running rich?
