Clutch Judder Solved!!

Post by flyboy777 » Sat Jan 14, 2012 7:27 pm

My 2007 123D has only done 30,000 careful miles and just lately the infamous clutch judder was getting worse.
It was only happening when cold when pulling away from a standstill.
There is a nasty uphill junction v close to my house and it was getting v bad here.

I am v careful with the car and try not to slip the clutch v much, I wondered if maybe there was a buildup of crap on the flywheel/clutch plate so I floored it in 5th at about 40-50 mph and gently depressed the clutch and held it when it was slipping a little for about 5 seconds then repeated it a minute or 2 later.
Probably taken a couple of thousand miles of the life but this morning from cold I had no judder for the first time in weeks so hopefully its done the trick.

Cant condone everyone trying this but it was getting so bad I had to try something, if you do try it dont let the engine rev too high or you may burn/scorch the clutchplate wont do any good, just let it rev 500-1000 rpm above where it should be. Its probably no worse for the clutch than when an elderly person parks their Micra in tescos you know all revs and clutch slip!

The official BMW fix is a DME software upgrade that keeps the idle revs higher.

I had this problem with my 120d, i rang up wollaston bmw, they booked it in for a day, said yes there is clutch judder, rebooked it the next week for 4 days and replaced the clutch and flywheel all on warranty, no arguing no quibbling, they just got on with it and did it

Very impressed by this, if its still in warranty or AUc warranty, take it to the dealer, and you may get the same level of service as i did :)

Just had a new clutch and flywheel fitted by Sytner due to the same judder when cold - 123d with 28k miles. Thankfully it was covered under warranty! Apparently the flywheel and clutch plate were contaminated with fluid (oil?).

Crank shaft oil seal or the seal on the gearbox side could be leaking. If they fixed neither
And it was contaminated badly, prepare for the judder to return!
