Ditto ... but seriously the best thing that I have ever learned about inspecting cars - including collecting "new ones" is to take somebody with you! It's so easy to get distracted by signing paperwork/being offered coffee etc etc that you can slip up. I've had 2 instances when picking up new cars when there has been dings in the doors and bumpers which had I not had the missus with me (who believe me has eyes like the proverbial s..t house rat) I would have signed off on. TAKE SOMEBODY WITH YOU!!

I've taken a bit of a risk and am expecting delivery of a '57 123d Coupe today... the catch is that it's done 170,000 miles :D
Obviously i'm not expecting it to be perfect, but what are the main thing I should be checking for on delivery?

Aside from "chuffing" and "wooshing" noises, are there any other warning indicators that the timing belt is on its way out?

Thanks in advance!

I purchased a 116i M sport (2009) today with 111,000 on the clock. Spent nearly 2 hours checking the car over from inside and out. Took a Carista OBD scanner with me to check codes and look for failures etc. I’d recommend bringing a torch with you and checking under the car/engine for leaks and cracks etc. My wife did the interior check and switched on/off every single switch in the car and checked A/C etc. I checked brake pads and discs for wear level etc. and then did further inspection of the engine and checked all fluids and filters etc. Obviously a car of this age will have wear and tear but it seemed to have been cared for. Managed to do a 45min test drive before buying and it was great in every way! Managed to get a free MOT, oil/oil filter change which saved me a few pence and got £200 off the asking price. Better than nothing.
