HID kit in OEM xenon headlight ?

Post by davegt » Wed Jun 07, 2017 4:03 pm

Ive been offered a set of OEM xenon headlights for my E88 currently fitted with halogens, the car will be off the road over winter for a couple of months and I may consider the full retrofit then but in the short term is it possible to bypass the xenon unit and fit a HID kit, if so what kit should I be looking at i.e. H7 etc?

I'm not looking for a debate on legality I understand the ins and outs, nor would I ever consider fitting a HID kit to the halogen housing, I'm purely looking at options for fitting the OEM Xenon units while I make a decision on either selling them or gathering the other parts needed for a full retrofit.

Thanks

They're D2S bulbs I believe. HID's in projectors are fine as long as they're levelled correctly.

The OEM housings take D1S. Choice of aftermarket kits for D1S seems quite limited and reports of dash errors/flickering/cutting out are common.

If I were you I'd put the money and effort towards a retrofit. All you need are ballasts/bulbs/wiring and probably an FRM depending on what year your car is.
