Hard cold start, Shaky idle and stop/start

Post by Tumi118i »

Have 2 issues with my 118i, chirping noise from steering area & also some hard idling at times & car sounds like it’s about to die when the start/stop activates. They can’t seem to figure out the second issue, steering noise issue seems resolved but now the steering seems a lot harder than before (could also be because they’ve borrowed me a 320i G20 and I’ve gotten used to that now). We’re currently waiting for an identical 118i to come so we can compare them side by side as I’m convinced my cold start and idle shouldn’t be that rough, technician reckons it’s normal. Hardly hard the car for 3months now and haven’t really enjoyed it yet.

Turn off the stop/start, job done, I used it for the first time last week and it does what you say, half the time it doesn't seem to be able to make its mind up especially in slow moving traffic

I generally don’t drive with it on either, it’s more the hard shakes and idling that annoy me. Do you know if there’s a way to permanently turn the start/stop off? Gets irritating to have to do it with every drive. My morning routine, Unlock Car, Get in, Turn on AutoHold, Turn off Start/Stop. Wish there was a way to keep the setting like that.

Through programming disabling the start stop is possible. I just setup my sport individual mode to the way I like, steering and engine to comfort, gearbox to sport. Start/stop is disabled with those settings also, but I still have to press one button - no great hardship is it?
Modes can also be setup to automatically be selected by programming as well...

Auto hold should only need turning on once, does yours forget it? Mine has a fairly smooth idle when stop/start is dissabled

I have to press the brake pedal quite hard for auto stop/start to activate, a light press of the brake (like in crawling traffic) it doesn’t come on.

When I first got the car I had to press the auto hold button each time I started the engine to activate it - now it’s on each time I start. I wonder if this is part of the car’s technology learning your driving habits?

@Justinitus yes it does need to you to press a bit harder to confirm that you are sure that u want activate start/stop or AutoH, that doesn’t bother me much. I’ll check once I get it back if it eventually “learns” my driving preferences otherwise will try go @cuke2u’s route.
