Next car after the 118d, what would you get?

Post by Wayno » Sat Dec 23, 2017 9:57 pm

So been 'reluctantly' considering moving away from the e87 118d that I've had for the past 2.5years.

It's only a 118d with a remap and suspension mods but the car has always felt great to drive. Even with the weight and lower power, I've shocked my mate and his 256hp Mazda3 MPS when he found it difficult to keep up with the 1er through some bends which is a true testament to how nimble these cars can be.

I've been looking at potential next cars. I graduate next year and will probably move so not looking for a big investment, just something exciting and somewhat reliable to use for a year.

I live in Scotland and my driving consists of:
50% Motorways
25% City Urban
25% B Roads and cruises with my friends, Madza3 MPS, Golf R, Audi A3 TSFi

Budget is 6.5K, max 7K and I've narrowed it down to these.

Renaultsport Megan 250 Cup Chassis (most keen on this but unsure whether I can live with cloth seats and plastics)
Renaultsport Megan 225 Cup
Impreza STi
Civic EP3

or stay with BMW and get

130i
E90/92 335i (don't know much about the n54 and not sure of maintenance costs at this price range)
E46 M3 (maintenance cost?)

Top speed power doesn't matter. More into usable power, handling and everyday 0-60 acceleration.

What would you get?

4x18x9J ET33 Inovit Thrust Wheels
Uniroyal Rainsport 3's 225/40/18 - 235/40/18

Aero Spoiler
Eibach Pro-Kit Lowering Springs
Pipe Dynamics Custom Exhaust

If you loved your 118d so much, I'd seriously consider a 130i if you can get your hands on a well looked after one.

It’ll be easier to stick with the 1 series and get the 130i as I can swap over some parts and retrofit parts from one car to the other but I was curious to see if something else could tickle my fancy. So far with my research I’ve noticed how Megan RS’s change hands so often, some having as many as 5 owners at 50k miles which is making me question if it’s a car that’s easy to live with. Or if it’s just a weekend warrior.

Anyway, definitely keeping an eye out for a 130i as well.

A Meg 250 Cup would destroy a 130i on interesting B Roads. Ask to be taken on a nice long test drive before buying though, not everyone likes the bobbly ride.

Will probably test drive both if I can find any in Scotland.

my wife has a golf GTI Pirelli, which has been mapped to 300bhp. Since owning for a year, we have had no issues. Its great fun and looks great.

Once off the line, it is pretty close to my E46 M3 and is quite brutal. Personally i think it ticks all the boxes - its quick, handles great, reliable, running costs are quite good, plenty of space, comfortable.

For £7k, you should be able to get a properly modded, 07/57 reg GTI.

Out of the cars you mentioned, (if that is all you would consider) i would go for the civic. The impreza, in your price bracket, would not be too great as the good ones are going for decent money now and can be expensive to run. The cheaper ones would require a lot of work, which as result push your budget up. The Renaults are quick and handle great but are expensive to maintain and are not typically reliable.

The civic will provide decent performance and pretty much bullet proof as well as great handling.

Sorry I missed the bit your later part of the post about the BMW's.

The E46 can be expensive to run if the big jobs have not been done. A good one will at least cost £10k. Anything under that is likely to buy either a high mileage or rusted one. I spent over £15k on work to mine in the 2 years i owned it, including £2k for vans and exhaust hub tab, £750 big end bearings, £1000 for reinforcing the subframe. The rest were in mods to bring the performance to where i wanted it. The car itself cost me £9k and had 88k miles on the clock.

Once the work has been done, they are not too bad.

The 335i with the N54 is a capable car, but from what i heard suffered from rattling turbos and a few other issues that could be expensive. I thought about buying one, but was advised to get one with the newer N55 engine - but that would take you over your budget for a good one also.

Just an update. I’ve got my eye on dealership 335i’s which come with dealership or RAC warranty. I’ve seen some SE’s with 70k and FSH and warranties for around the £5000 mark. An Msport would be ideal so I’ll keep an eye open for those if they pop up, maximum 120K with at least 6months warranty. Not bothered about shape.

Obviously I’m gonna have to give the warranty a good read to see what it covers and if I’m protected.

I’m also looking for,

A loaded 130i with max 100k FSH with mods done if possible. Any colour than Black £5000

Type R EP3, under £3000 and under a 100K

Audi A4 DTM 220/250 2.0TSFi Up to £7000

GTI Pirelli up to £7000

Priority would be the BMW’s but I’ll snatch any of the others if a good one shows up.

Thanks for the response, very helpful. Dropped looking for the M3’s and S4’s.

No probs.

The pirelli would be difficult to find as they made very few (225 if i recall correctly). We paid £11k for a sub 60k version. The ones I have seen for sale are going for at least £9k, even with 90k miles.

The edition 30 is essentially the same motor, with the upgraded engine and you should be able to get one within your budget. If you can stretch to £9k the Pirelli would be a good buy, as they don't seem to be reducing in value, so you could have a year or 2 of free motoring.

Just as a thought, have you considered a Z4 3.0 coupe? Im not sure how much practicality you need, but it may be worth a punt. I know they can be bought for not huge amounts of money.

I'll be really interested to see which way you go in the end - good luck with your search
