JapanRed's new Steed

Post by Japanred120d » Sat Jun 18, 2016 11:55 am

Took the Porsche on its (and my) first ever track day on Sunday at Croft. The day was in aid of charity and our car club were giving passenger rides throughout the day.

Have to say I feel like I've bonded with the car even more, although I didn't think this was possible.

The track was damp with a little standing water during the morning session; the 4wd gave me a huge advantage and I was overtaking 997 C2S's, as well as the odd Ferrari and Aston.

Track dried out by the afternoon and although the ferraris became faster, my confidence increased and I really started attacking the corners at quicker speeds.

Have to say that the Mclarens were the star of the show and went past me like I was stood still even when I was doing 130mph Image.

I had loads of compliments about both the sound of the car, and my driving. I don't claim to be a driving God but for my first track day I was keeping up with and overtaking some serious machinery.

The only downside was that every 5-6 laps the brakes were overheating and at one point got a bit squishy. But other than that I had a fantastic day and wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Nice one Rob! Not surprised about the brakes though, as the big stop for the last corner comes up pretty fast and often on the short lap!

I bet your car was amazing at getting onto the straight more quickly :)

After attending the northern romp last weekend and hearing some of the exhausts on offer, I felt like I was missing out and have therefore booked the car in with Gert at Carnewal in Belgium next month. Gert has a fantastic reputation, both here and in the US and I'm really excited about the prospect of more drama. I'm going to make a bit of a roadtrip of it and have a nice weekend away at the same time. Will keep this thread updated.

Having been absent from the forum for quite some considerable time, I was unaware of your change of cars.

Just a wee bit envious, but I'd probably be a liability in a car like that, so will simply admire from a distance.

Having read through the thread here, it looks like you're having a whale of a time with it and it was good to see it on the Romp, albeit only when it was parked, as I was in no position to keep up with you guys.

Hope you continue to have fun ..... enjoy :spotman:

Ah, I see! In that case, ignore my related question in the romp thread :)

I will have a look at Gert's offerings :)

Take care in Belgium though, as it effing horrible place to drive! A bad mixture of aggression and incompetence :(
They tailgate the crap out of each other, plus unawareness leads to some really sudden unindicated lane changes!!!

Ooooh, don't forget to do a before and after video. Cold start, drive off from standstill and drive-by please 8)

Cheers Paul Shame we didn't get chance to catch up on the romp.

Rob - Google Carnewal Pistonheads and have a read up on the reviews.

Will do some before and after videos for sure.

He modifies the existing exhaust on the 997.1 but for some other models can either swap the zorts or modify existing one.

Didn't really want to modify existing exhaust due to resale-ability but you only live once and I can't justify an Akra for £3k.

Rob - is there anything I need to buy, modify or be aware of for driving in France and Belgium?

Not sure if this is all but off top of my head for France -

• Warning triangle
• 2 X Hi vis jackets
• First aid kit
• (I believe the breathalyser isn't required anymore)
• headlight covers (eBay) to not shine headlight glare onto wrong side of the road.

Not sure about requirements for Belgium though sorry bud.

I think the hi vis vests need to be visible from the outside, so don't pack them in the bonnet.

Update:
We drove the 800 mile round trip to visit Gert Carnewal on Saturday, doing the whole trip in the one day. I'd arranged to have the Carnewal GT exhaust and 200-cell cats installed.

Leaving Leeds at 03:45 we arrived for our channel tunnel crossing 4 hours later. Two further hours of driving and we were in a quaint little village in the Belgian countryside, handing the keys to Gert. He showed me round his workshop and his collection of classic Porsches and then his wife drove us to the next village/town so that we could have a wonder and get a bite to eat. The weather was on our side and we even managed an hour laid in a park to catch up on some sleep.

A short time later and I was back at Carnewal and grinning ear to ear as I started the car for the first time since its surgery. The 911 sounded amazing, like it should've from the factory; Gert warned me that it will get throatier still over the next few hundred miles.

The car is approximately 30% louder than stock, with very little drone at 80mph, and crucially for me, maintains that classic raspy Porsche flat 6 sound. In all honesty I can't feel any difference in power that I wouldn't attribute to the placebo effect. The free flowing cats reportedly release 10-15hp but I didn't do this for more power. It was all about noise Image. There's the odd pop and crackle on overrun which I'd never experienced before, and the noise in the Dartford tunnel was nothing short of ASBO. As my girlfriend crouched down into her seat in embarrassment I felt like I would be happy to keep paying the toll over and over again to experience the noise.

The run home was uneventful and we were back by 22:00. The car achieved 26mpg which I was impressed with, at a steady 80-85mph on the motorway, and didn't drop a beat.

Anyway. The bits that you've been waiting for. Before and after videos. Apologies in advance, they were recorded on an iPhone, and my girlfriend took a photo instead of video on one of the cold starts, so you just miss the initial fire up. But other than that, I'm sure you can tell the difference. Turn your volume up ;-)
