Done with the M240i - what's next?

Post by tonyfonda » Mon May 08, 2017 9:56 am

Nearly 18 months that I've owned the M240i, and enjoyed it overall. Kept it simple (so called purist) and cheap: Manual shift and passive.

Drove it mostly on weekends (not a daily driver) since I bike to work.

There are quite a few negative posts on the M240i here and I read most of them. I agree with the issue of body roll that I found very annoying at times. The rest is irrelevant to me as I try to drive within the legal limits most of the time. I must admit being an average driver at best (have not figured out heel and toe shifting yet).

I am now looking for a weekender that is more fun than the 240i and around the £30k range. An ideal car would be the 718 cayman but £42k is above my budget, let alone running costs.

Something slightly more powerful than a GT86 and more fun that a golf R or S3/RS3/TTS. Not particularly attached to RWD consider that I live in Southeast Wales where it rains 400 days a year.

Any advice?

Gt86 with a supercharger perhaps? Friend of mine had one and said it was the most fun he's ever had in a car

Why not a 981 Boxster/Cayman? Running costs aren't that bad especially if only a weekend car. Aside from that - Exige?

Renaultsport Megane 275 Trophy is by all accounts an amazing car to drive.Dont make them any more but you can get some fantastic used ones for approx 20k.They look amazing in white or yellow and with the Acroprovic exhaust and recaro seats.Propper track focused car with renaultsports famed cup classis. You asked for more power than a GT86 with amazing handling look no further.I had a RS250 when they first came out and it was amazing. They fine tuned it over the years to the 275 Trophy which many say is perfection and even compare it's character to a GT3 for fun and handling.

Tuned GT86: I considered tuning but not for me. All kind of issues pop up with these things and resale is a headache

981 Cayman: Pricey when you crunch the numbers

Exige: Great idea but too track focused to my taste. Driving from Cardiff to North Wales (where it can be enjoyed the most )will most likely break my back as well.

Renault: Lots of positive feedback on these cars. I have never owned a french car. Any direct experience with the megane?

Another option is to wait for the GT86 replacement in 2019. I hear it may be powered by a BMW engine like a McLaren F1 :)

An 18 month old M240i?? I never knew they were launched that long ago. Am I missing something here? My M140 is just about 7 months old and I thought I was one of the early adopters.

How many seats required, for me I'd be starting with a Cayman and then going from there.

TTRS?

2 seats are enough. Porsche dealers skin you alive every time you visit them for maintenance.

You pay for Hugo Boss when you can buy a similar suit from Moss Bross (half the price, free alterations)...but Cayman seems to be the sharpest one out there.

Trust me Tony renaultsport make amazing cars.Dont worry that they are French they are built to a high standard certainly better than ford and vauxhall but obviously not as high as the German cars.I have had 4 renaultsports all been amazing cars to drive and not 1 issue with them.Had a clio 197 and 200 plus megane R26 and 250.All had the famous CUP chassis and handled way better than anything else I have driven including my M140i.Look online at the reviews they get they are amazing cars. The aRS 275 Trophy with the Acroprovic exhaust is one of the greatest handling cars ever made that is practical and affordable. Some motoring journalists have even compared the way it drives with a Porsche GT3 for excitement and fun.
They are not even expensive to run and maintain. You can probably tell I am a huge fan of Renaultsports haha😉

I'm getting quite excited about the new Toyota Supra (which is basically a tin-top Z5).

RS Renaults are always a good drive, if you can overlook the shonky build quality (speaking from personal experience).

The build quality on my megane RS250 cup was actually really good.Never had a problem with it everything was made solidly no squeaks or rattles and the finish on the dash was good nice soft touch material's lovely steering wheel and amazing leather Recaro seats.

How does your friend find the 275 in the wet?
