My tweeter install solution for door pillar trim cover

Post by Jrb » Sun Dec 16, 2018 6:47 pm

Hi
I installed tweeters as part of an overall upgrade. I decided to look at the corner trim cover where the Harmon ones would go.
To my surprise there is already a tweeter mounting already there in the back of the plastic cover !
I used a hole saw from the inside out then trimmed with sharp blade.
The Alpine DDT-S30 1inch 180w tweeters once stripped of clip on housing fitted straight in. I did have to trim the inside diameter of the cover to let the tweeter push in place from behind.

How is it wired up?

What head unit do you have? Business? Professional? Is it an iDrive?

The official solution is to daisy-chain off the mids, that's what the OEM Business and HK tweeters do, literally plug straight in to any BMW mid speaker.

You mean run them parallel? positive tweeter to positive mid etc?

With no cap inline with the tweeter wiring? Sounds like looking for a blown tweeter unless the unit has a built in one already.

Ah ok thanks, didn't realise that. I've built a few home hi-fi speakers but never done any mods to any car audio so wasn't sure.

So the OEM are actualy Harman Kardon, good to know.

The 013 (Professionsl) Tweeters are HK, the 012 (Business) versions aren't.

An old group buy with some useful part numbers: https://www.babybmw.net/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=28293

Hi
I just ran them from the door speakers in parallel the alpine speakers came with crossover which filters input fitted. Look on eBay they are only about £12.00 ! Bargain
Alpine really good clear definition I up rated the 4” door speakers with Alpine speakers to.
I’ve changed head unit to an aftermarket one with higher output but still using existing speaker wiring loom.
As for OEM units I think you would have to buy the Harmon Kardon corner trim panel which has a mesh grill.
Even swapping out front door speakers and adding tweeters would make a difference to OEM head units.
If you want any pics of internals of how I’ve fitted to existing trim panel I’m happy to take one off and post some
Cheers
Jon

Rix - worth it ?

Post by Jrb » Fri Jan 18, 2019 10:03 pm

Hi
In my opinion completely worth it . Best single upgrade by far was the Alpine 8” active sub . I bought mine of eBay new for £99.00 delivered. Easy to install and can be run off existing rear speaker wiring. Comes with all wiring required
