How much is too much bhp for 135i dct?

Post by Finfast » Thu Oct 11, 2018 11:09 am

So I’m considering a turbo upgrade on my 135i, I have absolutely fallen in love with this car it’s so much better than the e92 M3.. however I would like to take the car into the realms of silly so I’m wondering how much power the engine and auto box can cope with reliably?

Also would you go hybrid or single turbo conversion the car is fundamentally a nordschliefe car and road car sencond...?

Thanks for your help with this...

Presuming this for a E82 N55 engine 135i coupe ? the engine and box can take some serious numbers but you will need to uprate the turbo to make much more than around 400hp on the coupe, all depends how deep your pockets are i guess.

Now on my 3rd 130i, this time a nice E81 in Graphite, Previously 2 x 130i and 2 x 135i

Sorry it’s for a n54 auto... and I’d had her rollers at 400bhp and bit more in torque.. since then I’ve added water meth and a new Jb4 map which made a huge difference and the one it was on was a good few years old.. since asking I’ve seen that I can go to 500wbh and 700ftlbs... however I’d like to track the car so I’m wondering if that kind of power would be okay with track abuse as I know the Americans tend to race on drag strips for short amounts of time sooo just wondering if that really would be safe or does anyone know differently? Thanks

Ah that's a shame as n54 auto box is poor for tuning as struggles to cope with extra power from what I've seen on net, n55 dct box is same as m3 so can take a big increase.
I would say you are probably over safe limits so wouldn't go any higher. Americans mostly just do short bursts on drag strip etc so nothing like same stress as circuit use, also there dynos tend to read different to ours with there at wheel hp often same as our crank hp it seems.

If you want big power you can thrash on circuit you have wrong car, or at least gearbox imo

No conversion sorry still slushbox I guess, just presumed dct as that’s whats written on the button I have to turn off everytime I start the car, it has had the alpina flash map which works quite well and of course a quaife lsd.

I may try and fit an oil cooler to it then to potentially lengthen it’s life, does anyone do a specific kit?

Yep I’ve got the M3 lowers arms, antiroll bars front and rear, polybushed, and kw coilovers.. I only suffer a little understeer which I compensate for by trail braking tears the fronts up a bit but the coilovers aren’t adjustable so can’t dial it out... re brakes I’ve got the e82 brembos with pagid rs29 pads which are okay but realistically I’d like a front brake kit or may build something up as I have some pro ap 5000 that need a home... also could do with better coilovers looking at intrax 1k2 if I can get a good enough deal on them.. I want to get down to 7.30s btg at the ring, hopefully won’t suffer so much heat soak now I’ve got water meth
