Clutch upgrades

Post by Rjudgey » Sat Jul 17, 2010 12:27 am

Just been trying to find an alternative to the super expensive Sachs clutch which is around £500 just for the kit!!!

Now looking on real oem the release bearing mechanism is the same for just about any new BMW with a manual box from 1 series to 5 series, the disk diameter is also the same size at 240mm. So what I'm thinking is if we use the clutch plate from say a 330d on a 120d disk this could work out an effective upgrade on holding more torque without paying through the nose for sachs. Going with say LUK would be a good alternative I've never had issues with these. Or even a BMW plate and disk if they can be bought seperately otherwise costs will double! :(

May be able to use the 330d disk anyway but unless i can check the dimensions of the splines on the disk itself i can't guarantee it will fit. Chances are probably the same.

Anyway thought I'd share a thought on this as no one has really made any headway into this!!

Yes mine started to slip a tiny amount when i trailered my race car a few months back and kept doing it for a bit after i stopped then just cured itself. Been fine since but with 117k miles. When i have custom downpipe done and custom remap torque is likely to be around the 360 to 400lbft and this beyond probably what a pre fl 120d can handle

I know what you mean, trailering can be a bit vicious on the clutch. I remember trying to do hill starts on ferry ramps with a kit car on a trailer behind.

Lol i find the diesel so much easier pulling away not really bad on the clutch it was when the peak torque hit when on the move when it started to slip!
Noticed ur extensive suspension mods nearly as much as me lol but havent had rear bushes done did u have these fitted after the other mods or at same time? Comtemplating but as mine are new had to have a whole new frame reluctant to do just yet! Have you not thought about different dampers and springs?

Lol are you talking about the BMWP one?? If so my local dealer said it looks like it's going to be out around sept. So not long then. But he said it looks like it's going to be £1400 part. Also he said there are two kits, he doesn't know what the difference is but one takes 1 hour and another takes 5 hours to fit??? Sounds strange to me.

Ah  i didnt ask them the make of the kit, just asked if they had a uprated clutch for the 120d. £1400  I think the sachs one is looking more tempting at that price

My bad, I was talking about the BMWP engine upgrade for the 120D. I didn't read it correctly. .

Does it fit without modifications?

Most probably BMW won't sell the intercooler separately

From the look of th pics i've seen and the fact that the release mechanism arm that presses onto the plate is the same pn for all the BMW's using diesel straight 6 and 4's I'm pretty certain it's probably a big fat yes. But I'll need to get a couple of plates from a dealer or motor factors that are in stock and compare them just to make sure!! will keep everyone posted as i find out more!! spending £200 for an upgraded clutch would be far more wallet friendly than Sachs £600 uprated one!! all made by Sachs anyway which is the irony!! I'm sure they are just flogging them more as they are uprated and not stock and adding a few hundred on top for the pleasure!!

Half a decade later I know but what was the outcome from this? I like a creative ( cheap ) solution to a problem.

The 123d uses the 330d clutch and gearbox I think?

It should bolt straight on. If you find the part numbers for the standard 123d clutch then I'd just use that if it's the same part as the 330D. That'll hold nicely.
