No I bought it recently. The lady who owned it before had a service plan with BMW and didn’t take it anywhere else for servicing, so they wouldn’t have changed it. It was with a dealer for a while who said he wanted to buy the car himself, so it’s possible he did it, then maybe changed his mind when he saw how bad the diff oil was!

Good guide! Really easy stuff and no reason whatsoever to be afraid of doing it.

Just a couple of side notes:

-As said, already, the oil really stinks, and the nasty smell does not disappear easily. Make sure you are not very attached to whatever your wearing when doing this job.

-When removing the old oil, make sure to move the pipe around while sucking. There's lots of "hidden" areas with remaining oil.

I have an open diff on a e81.

Does the diff nut still need to be torqued to 60nm?

Thanks for this guide, just did my own run in service including the diff oil.

Cannot recommend this enough if you have a plate type LSD. 1450miles and the oil was a black creamy mess full of swarf from the plates.
Also only managed to get ~600ml out. Thought it was just the angle but it took ~900ml when topping up. So BMW may have not filled it enough when changing the diff.

And now I know for sure it has proper LSD oil in there! will be doing at every engine oil service.

Just as an FYI for M140i owners, I removed a vibration damper to get better access to the plug. Was an E12 socket I think and the bolt had factory lock tite on it so cleaned it up and re-applied locktite before re-fitting.

What is the source of the mag plugs?
Did my engine oil and gearbox oil today but thought I'd wait till I can get a mag plug for the diff.

Sorry for bumping old thread...

I’ve got a 2016 m140i with the standard factory diff on (no lsd).

What oil is best? Can someone link me to amazon/ecp? And the planes plug needed.

Thanks in advanced.

Sorry for bumping... Just wanted to thank you for your write up. Showed me how easy this job is, will do it next week after 225k km. Curious to see how the oil has been holding up :)
