My M135i gearbox plugs didn't have any kind of seal/gasket/washer from the factory.

So how did you make sure it sealed properly ? Teflon take or liquid gasket ?

I just torqued them up, it's been fine, so far.

Changed oil for Total gear 9 FE, but I'm still not completely satisfied with the cold shift.

Somebody has experience with ATF in these manual gearboxes? (120i 6-speed manual)

Cheers guys, thanks for the input.
The thing is, that for my 120d 2007 FL, on realoem, the oil recommended is MTF-LT3. The BMW original oil is 75W-90, where the redline is 75W-80. Will this be an issue for the car? The genuine and redline oils are mostly the same price for me, so what do you guys think? Should I get the Redline or BMW oil? Also..can I get a link for the exact product, so I won't get confused (Redline).

Many thanks,

When I had cold notchy manual gearbox, Red Line Shockproof oil did the trick for me - it was a very long time ago, don't know if this is still a recommended thing to do.

I just wanted to say thanks for this really great guide!

Managed to get out in the sun and complete this a couple of weeks ago, very easy steps to follow - hardest part was actually jacking the car up; especially as I had to do it twice having discovered the covers I had left 'in a safe place' ...

One thing I didn't read in this thread was the torque for the new plugs, which I found online here if anyone's interested:

For the record, I used Castrol Syntrans from Opie oils.

Had it changed with royal purple in the 130i manual at 145k km.. shifts feel slightly easier. Very little difference. Not sure how long these oils last but wouldn’t have bothered for just the shifts.

When I just got the car first/second/third where a bit stiff. Which was too slow for smooth shifts. After being a bit more forceful, to get shift timing right, that stiffness was reduced. Maybe that’s why the difference is now quite small..?

Hi. Just joined up. I'm planning on doing a gear oil and diff oil change on my wife's E87 116i '55 plate, 110k. I notice on one of the write ups, the poster says to replace the seal on the drain and fill plugs. I went to the stealership to ask about this, he got the exploded diagram up on the computer and it didn't show a separate washer next to the drain/refill plug. I ordered the new plugs, when they came there was no washer with them so we concluded there must be no washer fitted, I didn't end up buying the new plugs. I didn't think too much about that because my passat needs no washers either on the gearbox. What are your thoughts on this please? I'm planning to use Red Line MT-LV for the gear oil and Red line 75w 90 for the diff.

Indeed, there were no washers either on my car (see signature)

I also ended up reusing the factory plugs with no problem at all

Hi herx. Thanks for the reply. That's put my mind at ease somewhat. Ok, just gotta get the oils now.
