You need to change a valure with NCS expert. I did it on my 2005 model, so it works fine. I wrote a guide, will dig it up.

Re: How To - Retrofit Cruise Control

Post by RandomUsername » Mon Nov 05, 2012 11:43 pm

I created another thread, but this one seems to be with good advice and seems up to date.

So I have an E81 118i 3 Door 02/09

Trying to retrofit (when I say trying is trying to find the parts first!) cruise on it and am a bit stuck.

From what I understand you need to get a slip ring (switch steering unit column?) and I think the parts I might need are:

61319123042 and 61316950263 - from RealOEM

I believe I do not have a steering wheel heater (unsure but would there be a button on the dash somewhere?). I do however have auto wipers MFSW and rear wiper. Any chance my slip ring might have the cruise socket? Any chance to find the parts online?

Thanks

Hi

I have just been through exactly the same search for my E81 and found all the parts online (fleabay). They are now sat at the Post Office waiting to be picked up! Fingers crossed that all is well when I fit them.

For the slip ring you need part 61319123043 rather than the one ending in 042 as 042 doesn't have auto wipers (aka rain sensor). On the Realoem cruise page make sure you are reading the part number at the bottom of the correct description rather than the one at the top. 043 is rain sensor, cruise and MFSW. The slip ring took a bit of finding as it has to come off an E81, 87 or 91 (so that it has rear wiper functionality) with the correct options so is fairly rare secondhand. Having looked at other threads it doesn't appear that you can just retrofit the cruise stalk to your current slip ring as it does not have the wiring etc. Thats such a shame as on my 03 plate Z4 you could do precisely that and have cruise fitted in 10 mins for about 60 quid. All that was needed was a new stalk, it was plug and play with no coding required. Ah well!

61316950263 is the right part for the lower steering cowl, however when I spoke to BMW they said there had been a mod and I would need bottom and top parts - I don't believe them so have just gone for the bottom part! If you have a heated wheel then the switch is on the cowl under the steering wheel so you would need a different part.

Looking forward to fitting mine but it won't be till Christmas time that I can do it. Boo.

Cheers

Thanks for your reply.

I got quoted around 440-450 just for parts online. 470 from a stealer, and 700 inc labour.

I will look for the heated steering wheel button.

Can anyone advise what does it look like?

I will try and see if I can get the parts in Germany. have many friends there.

Will parts from a LHD be OK for a RHD?

Thanks again!

Way, way too expensive.

Check out prices here - http://www.fabdirect.com/

A good indy should do it all for around £225.

The slip ring sourced for mine had a faulty indicator stalk (only discovered after fitting), but rather than replace it with another one we just transferred the stalk form my original one - that saved me a bit. :)

Hi

Picture of the switch at this link http://www.bmminiparts.com/PartDetails. ... 6D846F941A It is down on the lower steering wheel shroud.

I got the slip ring for £120 and shroud for £15 off UK eBay and have been quoted £25-75 for coding depending how many boxes need updating. I did have a look on German eBay but the postage added up if you could even find one that would ship to the UK. Obviously there is some risk that the parts may not be perfect but fingers crossed. I hope to be able to sell my current slip ring to offset the cost somewhat.

Depending where you live there is a guy in Huddersfield that gets several mentions on this site as doing a good job. He quoted me £250 all in. His name is Peter and if you Google independentminispecialisthuddersfield.co.uk you should find his details.

Cheers.

£250 now? £225 recently but £175 when he did it for me last April (along with a lot of other stuff, though). It probably depends on the donor ring.

Peter is very good though - here's his web site - http://www.independentminispecialisthud ... specialist

How does doing the retrofit at an indy affect my Warranty?

(I still have 1 year warranty as I only recently purchased my bimmer!)

I have the BMW Mondial extended warranty and they said that so long as genuine BMW parts are used and fitted to BMW standards then they would cover those parts.

As I see it, my retro-fitted parts are guaranteed by my fitter and I'd only bother BMW/Mondial for original parts.

You would only have a problem if a retro-fit causes expensive damage elsewhere.

The only retro-fit problems I've come across is the odd fried FRM caused by dodgy LED/HID enhancements.

Thanks for an excellent how to, it was invaluable for helping me fit a new slip ring (squib).

Regards
Phil
