97° does sound a little hot for a diesel, I would expect it to hover around 88 - 90°.

Would it also be a reason why I'm getting only 340 miles per full tank?

That's worse than my 530d auto and on par with my old M3

The early Auto is notoriously awful on fuel 'around town', there have been numerous threads about it over the years. There's nothing you can do about it really.

Should return acceptable mpg on a long motorway run though?

It truly is bad.

So on this morning's commute of about 15 miles, the car got up to a max of 82'C and stayed within the 78-82'C range most of the time.

It didn't go any higher today.

Was that because the traffic was constantly moving?
As opposed to yesterday, where it was 15 miles of stop/start traffic?

It doesn't sound quite right, but I doubt an extra 6° will solve your low mpg issue, that's 95% down to the slushbox imo.

Update on mine;
- previously 39mpg average.
- TWG In camberley changed both stats for me
- first full tank since and I'm averaging 44mpg so far.

Not the massive increase I was hoping for but plus ~10% mpg better than nothing :)

Is yours an auto?

I'm currently getting about 30-32mpg on the trip computer...

Hi Immis,

I'm getting around the same economy as you with my 2006 120d auto, it also has a broken thermostat.

I am planning to change mine fairly soon.

Cheers

Let us know how that goes timk.

I'm thinking that I might do the same, given that it is such poor mpg.

First full representative tank 46.6mpg circa 500 miles to the tank. Before the stats were changed I was getting 39mpg and circa 400miles to the tank.

So looks good for me ; thanks for the info on this thread

I'm amazed you're getting 38 out of an old Auto, that's very good.

I get 31mpg in my daily traffic filled commute

and I get about 36-40mpg on the motorway, depending at what speed I am going, but always 65mph+

I've always thought that there is something wrong and that the mpg should be more.

So I've just done a motorway trip of about 20 miles.

The coolant temp sat at 74/75'C and the highest it went to was 78 but only for a split second under hard acceleration uphill.

Does this mean that I need to change my thermostats?

How much mpg am I actually losing at the moment? Does anyone have an average?
