Steering Wheel Whine?

Post by Tetsumi » Tue Nov 14, 2017 11:29 am

Hi Guys,

Ive got a steering wheel whine going on with my 135i 2012 DCT E82..

It seems only when I am going slowly and pulling out of my car park area or only sometimes when I pull into my work place car parking space (10 mins away from my house)..

So mainly seems to be while the car is cold.. it sounds like it is coming literally directly behind the steering wheel and not from the engine bay (I thought maybe power steering whine?)

It only does it at certain points in the wheel and not through the whole steering wheel and only when I am slowly turning into a space or something.

Can try and get a video soon.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Luke

Have you checked the power steering fluid levels?

I keep forgetting to get my tools out lol.

I am going to check ASAP was suppose to check last night while doing some other stuff but forgot.

Didnt realise the Powersteering cap is a bolt to unscrew.

Ive got a video of it:

That sounds very much like mine does.. I think the area probably needs lubing up.

PAS fluid should just be a cap not a bolt? It's on the right side of your engine and has a green ring.

My old 130i had this issue. Sold it in the end none the wiser to what caused it.
Saw some things online suggesting it was something in the actual column that caused it - a white plastic cog if I remember.
I could stop the noise if I pulled the noise towards me which indicated it was something rubbing.
Be interested to know what it was when and if you ever fix it.

I mean the cap is tightened with a 10-13mm bolt on the top of the cap, still not got round to checking it xD
