E87 120D reverse light fault

Post by Shaunp829 » Wed Oct 17, 2018 11:56 pm

Hi all, my BMW 120D has recently developed a fault where the reverse lights are illuminated regardless which gear is engaged. To date I've tried replacing the reverse gear selector switch but the lights stayed on. I've also disconnected the switch altogether but with no luck, the lights stayed lit...
I've removed the FRM and had it sent to a specialist to be tested as i was told this could be the fault, only to be told there was no issues with my module. Ive now been led to beleive it could be a possible bad wire in the engine bay drawing power from a different source. The lights dont illuminate when the ignition is turned off.

If theres anyone who could point me in the direction of where to go next it would be much apprectiated, thanks

Good work so far, you’ve checked the likely candidates.

Have you taken the lighting panel out and checked for damage/corrosion/short circuit at the plug or on the panel itself? Unlikely given ots both sides.

Tto get both lights on, I would think its got to be a problem with the wiring from switch to FRM. If it was wiring from the FRM, then you’d be unlikely to get a fault on both.

Do you have reverse park sensors? Any problem with those staying on?

Thanks for replying nottsknots, no the car doesnt have reversing sensors or a camera. To be honest ive not had a look at the light units themselves yet, ive never had a problem like this before so I'm not too sure where else to look.
Do you know if it would be easy to reach the wire from the switch to the FRM? Ive tried to find diagrams of where it runs but no luck

UPDATE: the problem is now fixed, it appears that after I had the clutch and flywheel replaced 18 months ago, the wire for the reverse gear selector switch wasn't secured properly.
The wire was resting on the top of the gearbox and melted the coating away overtime, a simple error with very frustrating consequences! To fix the problem we slipped a protective sleeve over it and cable ties it back to prevent it happening again as the time and labour to replace the wire just isn't viable on this car.

Hope this helps anyone with a similar problem to mine :D

Good work, that man. Good to know, and a nice cheap fix.
