2013 F20 125d - Poor MPG

Post by BeemerCheemer » Sun Feb 10, 2019 11:03 am

Hi all,

New member here, having just bought a 2013 F20 125d with 60k mileage in VO.
Having driven it for just over a month, am a little concerned as it seems to be averaging 30-32Mpg with a mixed variety of driving, mainly motorway / bypass miles. I drive quite conservatively, but do use sport mode all the time.

Have filled up twice now to the brim and achieved 340miles each tank. Looking online and through other posts this is obviously significantly lower than the 500+ miles per tank that others report.

There’s no EML present, have scanned the car using Carista and no error codes present (apart from a brake wear sensor). Car doesnt feel to be hesitating or misfiring and there’s most definately no loss of power, if anything it feels more powerful than the 218bhp it should be pushing out.

Im suspecting that the car could have been remapped (albeit badly) by a previous owner. It feels a lot faster than what you’d expect 218bhp as standard to deliver (moved from a Mk5 Golf R32 to the 125d)... and the stop/start appears to have been coded out.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks in advance

Ross

125d are not known for their economy, they have very short gears.

How hot is the coolant getting? It should get up to 88C pretty quickly, even in winter.

Tyre pressures all correct? All brake discs the same temp? (Dragging callipers are quite common, unless you have the good blue Brembo brakes?)

A remap shouldn't really hurt the mpg when commuting normally, it will only squirt in extra fuel when you're enjoying yourself.

Unsure re: coolant temperatures, will check the menu after a drive later today and update.

Brake discs and pads are all new. No binding that I can tell. Its M spec, so has the blue calipers. Tyres all at same pressure too etc.

Did note that even when in comfort mode, lightly blipping the throttle causes mpg reading to drop as low as 8mpg even when warm.

Thanks

So, from cold start, drove ~6miles or so at 45-50mph, pulled over and the readings from the hidden menu were;

O. Temp 5.8c
Coolant Temp 79c
Oil Temp 69c
O. Temp Sensor 24D ADC

Filled up completely, Miles to empty showed as 485Miles after fillup, reset the MPG computer and drove a 15 mile journey home in ecopro, 13miles motorway with cruise control 75mph, 2 miles 30mph roads. Trip computer showed avr. Mpg 33.9 when arriving home. Miles to empty now showing 453miles.

Thanks

Your engine's cold, coolant should be 88/89°C. Oil should get up to very roughly 100°C on a longer run.

I'd repeat your experiment over, say, 20 miles? If everything is still luke warm, it's time to look at your thermostat/s.

Had to nip out anyhow and help my sister out.

~35 mile round trip;
Took about 10 minutes to get there, but coolant temps seemed to stay around 87-88c. When booting it, however it rapidly drops to 82-83c and slowly creeps back up. Oil temps seemed to remain at 99-100c and didnt go over.

Presume my thermostats are ok then? Would carbon build up on intake / EGR cause a crappy MPG? Cars also booked into BMW week after next for the EGR recall, so will see if that improves it any.

Cheers

I would chop it in for a M135i. You'll get better economy :D

You ever find out the issue Ross? Has your mpg improved since the recall?

Sorry, only just seen your reply.

BMW garage postponed the recall work as they were still waiting on parts. No date set as yet for it to be done, other than a promise that they'll call me when the parts come in. Cant complain as its a free recall.

Poor MPG still there. Tempted to check the EGR valve myself for carbon buildup.

Hi, i ve just come across your post, 340 miles on full tank is surprisingly low. My 2014 S3 would give me that kind of mileage driving on similar roads to you.
I have a 225d now and easily get 450-500 on a 55l tank which I'm sure would be the same tank as yours, i don't drive like a grandad either but the only difference might be that i drive it mainly in comfort on my daily 50 mile commute.
My car goes in for recall next saturday so will report back if i notice a drop in mpg.

... sigh, couldn't make this sh*t up...

So. After re-arranging the appointment a few times. My car was finally booked in for the EGR cooler recall on Tuesday this week. Advised should be done in 24 hours. However, after dropping off, later that day, had a call to tell me that the EGR Valve was fubar and also needed replacing. Asking price; £250. Thankfully, bought the car in January with full service history and invoices. The EGR valve was replaced last year by a BMW dealer after a Drivetrain WL. Hence, covered by warranty and they agreed to replace it FOC.

Yesterday, received a call mid-day, "Your cars ready to collect now" ... YAY I thought, heading down to get there shortly before 5pm. Only to be told they'd made a mistake, the car wasnt ready, during the replacement of the EGR Cooler / Valve, they accidentally split a piping and as they didnt have any in stock, it would need to be couriered from another dealer.

They humbly apologized for the mix up, assured me that it would be sorted today and that they would deliver the car to my home address... even were kind enough to give me a lift back home.

Fast foward 24hours to today, had a call two hours ago, car was ready and they're en-route to deliver it. Only to receive a further call an hour later, stating that they had to recover the car back to the BMW dealer as it threw an EM Light and went into limp mode when they were on their way to deliver it. They'll give me a call "later" to give me an update...

Finally got the car back. The engine light was caused due to the sudden change in air-fuel mixture apparently.
They cleared it and it's all good.

Took the car for a 30mile round trip and averaged 57.4mpg which is definitely a marked improvement.
