Intermittent Horn

Post by wlmoate » Mon Jul 10, 2017 7:09 pm

Hello,

I have a 2013 125D M Sport that has developed an intermittent horn problem ( no horn sound) Sometimes it will start to work again so don't think it is the actual horn. Has anyone else had this problem and any suggestions on tracking down the issue?

Have you had the airbag removed and put back in at all?

Could be it's somehow become misaligned. Worst case it'll probably have to be a new module on the steering wheel. Best bet is to get the dealer to have a quick look over it.

Hi,

The airbag hasn't been removed. When you say new module on the steering wheel, which part are you referring too?

I'd be looking at the wiring and electrical connections to the horn; could be corrosion.

I'd have suggested checking fuses, but not if its intermittent - that would just fail.

Not had any problems on my trusty beemer, but my second ever car (Vauxhall Nova) corroded after a particularly harsh winter (with road salt absolutely everywhere). You may have a dodgy seal allowing salt ingress.
E87 118d, stock, plus PDC control unit drain, Parrot, debadged, Mothercare baby shades (but no babies), and occassionally a good layer of wax. Instantly forgettable, and thats the way I like it.

Gone (East), but apparently not forgotten.

Hi,

I will check the connections to the horn. Though when it doesn't work the relay in the FEM cannot be heard activating so think it is switch or a slip ring issue. Thought the communications between the slip ring and FEM is some single wire data bus

Hi,

Just wondering if you managed get this horn issue fixed?

I have the same issue on a 2013 118D M Sport. It always seems to work, whilst the steering wheel is turned, but not whilst it is straight. Cruise control etc all seems to work, without any issue.

Thanks

Very common problem on F3xx series cars. I've known a dozen or so replaced under warranty

May be worth blagging BMW for a new one?
