Weird!! Rough idle 'shudder' when Aircon turned OFF. F20 116i Sport 2014

Can someone please give me some help here & let me know if this is normal, or if not, has anyone had this before/suspects they know what is causing it?

A few months back I started to notice the idle on my F20 116i was a bit shuddery sometimes (FYI i've only had the car since February). I'm not talking a big vibration, I mean a sort of 'hiccup' or shudder intermittently every 10-20 seconds or so. Not enough to see, but enough to feel through the gearstick and the seat, with the occasional shudder that's much more noticeable than the others.

Then I noticed there seemed to be some hesitation in the acceleration, and then one day it started misfiring so badly that it was un-drivable. Garage replaced the sparks and coils, and it was drivable again and seemed to be ok.

Couple of weeks ago, I started to notice the shudder again sometimes. Took it to a BMW specialist to be looked at, and when I turned up it wan't doing it any more. So left it with them to see if they could replicate the issue, or diagnose. They've had it this weekend, and tested it over a few days and couldn't find anything, or replicate the shuddering. They plugged into diagnostic: no codes, all sensors etc within tolerance, no misfires, injectors all good etc, nothing suggesting anything wrong.

Drove it home today, and all seemed fine. Then when i get home, I turn the aircon off while the engine is running, and the shudders started again. Turn it on, and the shudders stop. did this a few times and realised it only does it when the aircon is turned off! The garage must have had the aircon on whenever they tested it, which is why they couldn't feel what I could.

I've noticed the shudders seem more frequent or noticeable when the engine is warmer.

Had a look round forums etc, and i've seen similar things from very old posts about different car makes, but nothing with a definitive answer. One suggestion that seemed to make sense is the idle RPM is too low, which causes it to occasionally almost stall, which makes the shudder. Then with aircon on, the load the aircon puts on the engine speeds the RPMs up so the shudder stops. Does this sound plausible to anyone?

Is the coils/sparks misfire issue I had a few months back unrelated and a coincidence, or is it related to this idle shudder in some way? I'm sure it didn;t do it at all for a while after they were replaced, but I'm not sure coz I have no idea how often I've had the aircon on!

Should I be worried or just leave it as it is and live with it?

I will be beyond greatful if anyone knows how to help, this is driving me bonkers!!! :x

thanks,

I don't know if it's normal, but I'm having similar problems with my E88 118i (N43 engine).
With AC off, it tries to idle at 600 or so, and it shudders and feels rough and uneven. Turning AC on raises it to more like 800 and it's a lot happier there. The gearstick also vibrates at idle. I've got a new oil pump and NOx sensor, and as of last night it hadn't thrown any error codes (checked with Carista).

Not sure if you both experience the same as I do (N43 120i). I posted 2 days ago in this forum ;)

But!!! The BMW specialist I go to told me that the engines do not enjoy being set to no-airco as the idle rpm will drop too low. Also, I called the specialist today about the noise I heard, and he told me that it was a common "feature". According to him my engine was sounding way better than the ones he had in before (mine is at 118.800 km). Even though I think the sound is weird. And I also experienced the hickups before, however after spark plug replacement it disappeared for me! Sometimes I do get some hickups when I accelerate and have the engine at ~1700-1950 rpm....

You may be onto something there. I've been running mine with AC on constantly and it's definitely behaving better. I don't think my old 2008 118i had this issue, though it did throw up a lot of other engine problems over the time I had it!
