Clarification needed about servicing

Post by Jon-series » Fri Nov 08, 2019 10:15 am

Hi,

Recently bought a 2014 116d and the previous owner told me that there is no service book as it is no longer recorded that way anymore. Instead the service dates are recorded on the on-board computer, but only if the service is carried by BMW. Another thing she mentioned is that servicing is due when the indicator on the dash tells you so, and not necessarily every year or every 10,000 miles (whichever comes first) which is what I had always thought it to be.

Could someone please confirm if what the previous owner said is true or not? and confirm the correct service interval?

I have found the service dates on the on-board computer, so know that part is true.

Any help would be appreciated!

Yup, that's more or less correct. Some of the better Independent specialist garages will have a link to the servers in Germany, so it's not strictly 'only BMW' that can record services.

Engine services are asked for by the CBS every 24 months, or very roughly every 18k (highly variable depending on usage), whichever comes first.

As Mark says, it's from the dash. The car will tell you when it needs servicing, and it gives you plenty of notice of the next service required.

Mine currently says 10,000 miles or May 2020 for the next service.

Mine will always time out rather than be mileage.

I see, it seems like the intervals are quite a bit longer than I'm used to! Thanks for the replies guy, that's good to know and reassuring. :)

You may increase the chance of your engine lasting by reducing the oil and filter interval to 10k/1 year as you suggest.
