Power steering gone!

Post by Miyo360 » Wed Apr 18, 2018 9:18 am

Hi,

So on my usual commute to work, the steering got VERY heavy about half way through the journey and did not resolve itself. When I arrived, I switched the engine off for a minute, then back on, but steering was sill ridiculously heavy. So heavy in fact that when I turn left at a T-junction I can't turn the wheel enough to stay in lane! The power steering is completely gone.

I'll take a look at it during my lunch break, and will start by looking at the fluid. I'm suspicious of fluid as the problem started when I was driving up a ramp (the A4 Hogarth flyover for those that are familiar with it). Although no warning lights appeared on the dashboard.

Thanks in advance.

What car do you own, is it a BMW?

Why not add some car details to your signature to save us asking every time? :)

Certainly could be low fluid, any signs of fluid leaks either inside the engine bay, or in front of the radiator?

OK, the belt was resting at the bottom of the engine bay. I have hooked this up and the belt looks good and is intact. It has a little oil in patches on the outside, but otherwise looks fine.

Any tips/tricks to getting this back on?

Thanks in advance

ok, I got the belt back on by looping it by hand around the smaller wheel and half around the big wheel, then using a socket set to slowly, manually turn the larger wheel around until the belt snapped into place.

However, after a 10 mile drive, it jumped off again. It seems my pulley wheel is not rotating perfectly in line - there is a slight wobble to it - especially when the engine is idling (it is more stable at faster rpms).

Any idea what this could be? or how to improve it?

Thanks

Sounds like it's time for a new one, bearings failed?

Hey,

So whilst working out whether to attempt this repair myself or take into a garage, I have been driving it around for a few days and despite the heavy steering the car has been fine. Probably done near 100 miles over 7/8 journeys.

Anyway, today the red battery warning light came on the dash!

I thought the short belt that had fallen off just fed the power steering...? Or does it also feed the alternator? I can't find a consensus online.

Cheers.

Urgh. Just been out to have a look at the serpentine belt has now jumped off.

Seems like the main wheel (what is that called?) Is way too wobbly to handle either belt!

From what I've read I have now lost the power steering, the alternator, the coolant pump, air con, and the idler (whatever that is!) so I'm reluctant to drive it anywhere but the closest garage.

Saying that, I just had a look online at a mobile mechanic. I have added two jobs to the 'basket'. See screenshot below. Is this the right description of the repair that is needed?

According to my Haynes manual, it is the 'crankshaft' pulley that needs sorting.

Are the mobile mechanic and Haynes talking about the same thing??

Thanks in advance.

Is this a job for a DIY'er? Or regular mechanic? Should I take to BMW? Or any independent?

Lastly, do you have an idea of cost or time required?

Thanks again.

I'd just change the crank pulley myself, they're quite dear - even from ECP. Not done it before so can't guess a time, shouldn't take you long though.

Thanks. From looking at YouTube and other places, it would seem easier to raise the car up and replace the pulley from the ground. It involves locking off the flywheel with a special tool. Sadly I don't have a set of stands to even begin this, nor the mechanical nouse to be confident doing it right.

Might just have to call around and get some prices.

Ps: without any belts running how far can I safely drive the car before it explodes into a ball of flames (bacause i won't have the coolant pump running)

Cheers

It's not a great idea to move it far, you'll end up with a very hot cylinder head quite quickly.
