130i whine bearing or diff? Update video added

Post by Brendog » Thu May 10, 2018 10:25 am

My 2008 95,000 km 130i has developed a metallic whine in the rear (I think). A high pitched scraping or fine grinding sound is the best I can describe it but its faint and hard to hear and there are no other symptoms at all but its getting worse slowly I think. It only seems to occur between 30-60km/h and its constant, no obvious change turning, braking or power on/off quickly but its hard to tell as its so faint. Sounds a bit like something in the rear disc but I don't think it's that, brakes are fine and recently inspected. Been hoping it will go away or its just a wheel bearing but I guess its the diff? Any ideas?

Many thanks

It's impossible to diagnose noises accurately over the internet. Could be wheel bearing, prop bearing, gearbox, diff, brake caliper, brake shield, even tyres can make odd noises if they're low on tread.

Thanks, I might stick a GoPro underneath and see if I can isolate the noise.

For what its worth when I have had wheel bearings on their way out they generally tend to drone and the noise gets louder with side thrust for example when going around bends.

Definitely not a sticking caliper? There always seems to be a spate of them on the 130i at this time of year.

Don't think its the brakes but I'll check again. It gets louder when its at operating temperature. Hard to hear when its cold but when you come down from motorway speeds thats when you can hear it the loudest. Also, it makes no difference to the sound if you're in drive or coasting in neutral.

Have you checked the tyres there’s a wear condition called castellation that causes a whine similar to what your oexperiencing

Thanks. Tyres have a lot of tread, almost new on the outer but they are more worn on the inner edges, especially on the drivers rear. Its a very metallic scraping sound over a drone so hard to believe its that but who knows.

I made a video. Its a higher pitched intermittent metallic scraping sound. Starts at about 10sec, can hear at 38sec, quite loud at 57sec, 2:14 and 2:50. Still can't tell where its coming from.

Took it to a local euro garage but they weren't sure, said it could be the diff but wanted to start pulling things apart, nope. I changed the diff oil but it made no difference whatsoever, if it is the diff would new oil (Redline 75w90 GL-5) make any difference to the noise?

No, you can't usually quieten down a dead Diff bearing with new oil.

No joy with your GoPro? Can you get hold of a mechanics stethoscope?

Go Pro footage here:

Starts at about 10sec, louder at 20sec its a faint higher pitched intermittent metallic scraping sound, people don't always hear it at first. Can hear at 38sec, quite loud at 57sec, 2:14 and 2:50.

I'm listening in mono, can't hear much and certainly can't tell which direction any noises are coming from.

Up on a ramp with a stethoscope? Should make diagnosis pretty easy.
