Valvetronic error code

Post by riccie_120i » Sun Jun 17, 2018 11:15 am

Image here is of interest for two reasons.
a) wife captured car hitting 111,111 miles which is a bit of a rare occurrence(!)
b) at about the same point the dash error warning came up.

IMAGE >> https://drive.google.com/file/d/1EkfP-I ... sp=sharing

Continued journey for about 50 miles as car was running fine albeit with reduced power. RAC came and had a look yesterday (I don't have an OBD reader, but might actually get one now*) and read the fault as 'Valvetronic error'

All RAC did was erase the code and then we started the car and it continued running fine. Said it may be a glitch or may come back.

Car is due to go to garage for a general check over and oil change etc, which is due anyway, so I will report this error. I have read it could be valvetronic motor, valvetronic sensor, or perhaps the vanos solenoids.

RAC did not capture the code, but then again it is only a problem if it reoccurs.

Any ideas what is most likely are welcomed!

I guess you have a 120i. Fault will be due to: faulty valvetronic motor, faulty valvetronic sensor, oil on valvetronic sensor plug, worn valvetronic levers etc, stretched timing chain, slipped timing chain. It won’t take long for a specialist to diagnose. My guess is faulty motor.

Thanks AP1

Yes, 120i. Just drove 80 miles and no recurrence of issue so suggests it is more like something intermittent. So perhaps the motor packing up a bit or an iffy sensor.
I'd expect something like timing to trigger the fault almost straight away if it was slipping/slipped, besides car ran crisp which is unlikely if timing was out.

thanks for the suggestions. as always once diagnosed I will post update for completeness.
