e81 118i limp mode

Post by OvEr_KiLL » Fri Jul 13, 2018 1:40 pm

car has been driving fine and didnt hear any noise from broken timing chain guides etc. but yesterday i went in to reverse and then first gear and then just after when i went to park the car was really shaking a lot and the engine light came on, turned the car off and back on and no engine light and sounded fine. then i went to drive down the road and the engine light came on and the car had less power and sounded louder, really sluggish in the lower gears
took it to the garage and hes had it on a scanner and seems to think it could be the timing chain but that wouldnt show up on the scanner would it but would it cause the car to loose power and make the engine light come on?
i also read on here about a faulty ignition coil which sounds more likely from the symptoms i was having..
any ideas?

I had something similar a few years back with my old 116i, if I remember correctly it was faulty ignition coil and clogged spark plug...

Its quite common for the 118i timing chain tensioner to fail, which leads to the chain slipping a tooth/many teeth. Basically the timing slips out leading to less power, rough running, and poor starting. If they slip too far (timing goes way out), the car won't run at all.

I'm not saying this is definitely your issue, just trying to explain the garages' theory.

Coil packs and injectors are fairly common too, BMW 4 cylinder engines are not the best. :(

yeh i know the 4 cylinders are not the best but the car only has like 43k on it i am getting the timing chain fixed but the garage says he hasnt got the tool to do it, is this this what he is talking about? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Petrol-Engin ... =R40&rt=nc he told me it would be £350 for the tool
and when i get the timing chain done how long do you think i will get before it breaks again?

Are you going to a BMW specialist?? Or just any old garage? A decent BMW place will have all the right tools, and know what they're doing = shorter labour time.

No idea how long it go on for before letting you down again, could be days, could be many weeks.

You can drive them hard if/when they're healthy. The chain tensioner works via oil pressure, so if the oil is old and thin you're asking for trouble, imo.

cheers man, thanx a lot. he did say the oil pressure was low or something. it will be getting towed to another garage most likely that specialise in bmw. they will put new oil in when they do the job wont they and il ask them if they can re program the service to 1 year/10,000 miles instead of 2 years/20,000 miles

problem was the chain tensioner and a injector had gone, when i checked the engine oil before the tensioner broke the line was in between the 2 lines on the display, could of been that and old oil?
