123d E82 Turbo noise

Post by codygc2 » Thu Sep 13, 2018 1:41 pm

Hi guys, first post on the forums, sorry if it's in the wrong section.

I'm a little unsettled by the noise my car has suddenly started to make. So went to work, car was fine, no noise, no problems. I had my tyres changed this morning during my break at work and when I was driving back, I began to hear a very faint whistle - Presumed nothing of it as I know diesels whistle anyway. However, anxiety with the noise began to sink in lol and I went for a 5 minute spin, below are the videos of the noise.

In neutral -

Under load -

The noise becomes more apparent the higher the revs are, is this the first sign of turbo failure?
Car drives fine, pulls fine, not sure if there's signs of smoke but will get a friend to follow me on the way home to double check.

I had a similar issue with my previous car, it gave a louder whistling noise and I presumed the turbo was going but I removed the EGR and the problem was fixed? Could this be a similar instance?

The car is a 2011 123d automatic e82.

Any advice is appreciated,
Thanks in advance.

Does it sound like a dentist drill in the neutral video? Always hard to tell watching on the phone.
Is the dpf still in the car? From my knowledge if its just going and the dpf is there it will be catching most the soot from the burning oil,so smoke may not be the usual accompanying symptom until a dpf light. Is it using oil?
Whats the mileage like? Whistle or whine? Whistle/woosh would make me think boost leak.

Hi mate, thanks for the reply.

When being revved in neutral, it made a slight siren noise. (You can kinda hear it in the video, when it's coming down on revs).
Yeah the DPF is still on, standard car. I don't think it's using oil, checked the dipstick and it's not changed since I did the oil change.

85k, the noise isn't apparent until going over 2k, if I boot it (which I've only done once for the video, too scared to even drive it), it sounds like a dentist drill like you said. When in neutral, more of a light whistle/siren.

Was booked in to be check by a local indie but they've been messing me around. So I've sourced a local BMW specialist and will be contacting Monday to book in, hopefully I get some light shed on the problem. Will update!

No worries, Generally when you hear either the siren or drill noise its the start of a turbo failing. If its the case, you can get the turbo's rebuilt or exchange them. Substantially cheaper than a brand new unit.
Fingers crossed its something cheaper and easier to fix but judging by the description of the noise etc I'd be prepared.
