F20 intermittent Cruise control failure

Post by DrewMsport » Fri Sep 21, 2018 3:25 pm

Afternoon guys, so after 55k miles of trouble free driving the f20 decided it wanted to join in with other stuff breaking at the minute...very strange fault which seems to come and go. Started off very rarely maybe once a month after standing over wkend if not been used, once started and drove off flashes up cruise control failure on clocks which then turns into yellow triangle. Sure enough pressing cruise button does nothing. 5 min down road triangle on speedo disappears and cruise button works and car is happy. About 2 weeks ago this started then haopening daily on commute before today coming on and staying on. Aswell as cruise button not working this time i lost all steering controls including phone and stereo function on other side of wheel. Turned off on driveway just now, restarted and faults gone again? Any ideas before i have to go to a stealer but its so intermittent it probably wont be on for them unless i perhaps leave it over night with them in the hope they can reproduce it first thing in morning when its been sat?

Guess you don't have access to carly or bimmercode to try get a code when the faults present?
Did this start after a service originally? Just wondering if its software related. I would aim for a code when the faults present, could be any manner of sensors that the system looks at or a fault in the switch itself.
Someone may have the knowledge on the subject but if not thats my advice. Carly or bimmercode are definitely worth the investment.

Found an intermittent fault with an injector on my mates e90, obviously not saying its that. Just an idea of how good these home diagbostics can be. When bmw here charge £149 for an hours diagnosis its definitely worth the investment.

Yeah im not keen on the idea of beamer diagnosis charge.....ive have access to my friends snap on diagnosis at Honda garage but its not a bmw specific. Again its trying to get it scanned when its on as it can be just for a minute sometimes. Ill look into my own bmw scanner though as i have no intentions of changing it for many years. Once ive done with it the mrs is inheriting it, so it will stay in family while i move up to a 4 series hopefully so a good investment for future. Such a shame its an annoyin fault like this after such uneventful running for all those miles. But i sit on the motorway for 90% of my miles so its a handy gadget.

When I started reading the description of your problem my immediate thought was it was battery related - occuring after being left unused a few days and fault going after being driven a short time, and presumably the battery is 5 years old. However that doesnt quite sit with your more recent symptoms, But do you have any other poorly battery symptoms like stop/start not working or warnings about low battery if listening to stereo with engine off ?

I know someone had the same problem and had to change the SQUIB behind the steering wheel.its the part that the steering controls and airbag plug into:

Nope i think battery is strong. Never has any SS issues or start problems.

Intresting, i was leaning toward perhaps the steering wheel itself when i lost all controls including phone on otherside of wheel so this makes sense.

When I had cruise control issues, I.e. kept popping off with a fault, it eventually was traced to an intermittent wheel speed sensor. It was very intermittent, would go weeks at a time with no issues.
